ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (4-3-1, 1-0-0 Liberty League) men's soccer team opened Liberty League play with a 2-0 win over Clarkson University (2-6-0, 0-1-0 Liberty League) on a sun drenched Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.
John Kaddo (Troy, NY/Averill Park) and
Coty Winchell (Belfast, NY/Belfast) each scored for the Tigers.
RIT dominated play, out shooting the Golden Knights 27-4, including 17 shots on goal. The Tigers took five corner kicks to none for Clarkson. Sophomore
Mark Reeves (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) picked up his third shut out win of the season, making one save. Michael King took the loss in net for Clarkson, making 12 saves.
The Tigers came out firing early and often in the first half, rifling 14 shots over the opening 45 minutes of play. The Tigers had three great scoring chances that Clarkson defenders saved off the line.
Kurt Spiegel (Monroe, NY/Monroe Woodbury) had the better of the three chances off a corner kick for RIT in the 25th minute. His header was directed towards the back post and looked to be in, but Trevor Blackwell stayed on the back post for Clarkson and saved the ball off the line.
RIT finally broke through in the 59th minute on Kaddo's team leading fifth goal of the season. He sent a bending shot from 18 yards out that tucked inside the right post and just out of the reach of the diving King, giving RIT a 1-0 lead.
Dave Boselli (Chadds Ford, PA/Garnet Valley) and
Danny Bloshkin (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) each had assists on the play.
Winchell put the game away with his second goal of the season in the 88th minute. He intercepted an attempted clearance by King and broke in alone, beating King with a low shot into the right corner.
The Tigers are now 21-20-3 all time versus Clarkson, and are 3-3-0 in the last six meetings, including two straight wins.
RIT returns to action next Friday, Oct. 4 when they host Bard College in Liberty League action from Tiger Stadium at 4 p.m.
