ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT volleyball team (7-5) finished 3-1 at the 25th annual RIT Invitational after splitting a pair of matches on Saturday at Clark Gym. RIT opened the day by defeating SUNY Potsdam (6-7) in four sets on Saturday morning, then fell to Medaille in four sets to wrap up the meet later in the day. Freshman outside/right hitter
Sarah Szybist (Chicago, IL/Ramstein) was named the RIT Invitational Most Valuable Player.
In the opener against Potsdam, RIT won the first two sets 25-13, 25-21, before dropping the third set, 27-25. RIT rebounded to win the fourth set by a score of 25-18.
RIT slammed a season-best 20 service aces in the win over Potsdam, including a season-best seven by
Anna Valentine (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon). Szybist slammed a season-best 25 kills, while hitting .347. Sophomore
Sara Martin (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) recorded a career-best 13 kills to go along with 10 digs and three aces. Valentine added six kills and five digs, while
Bethany Davis (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) recorded 14 digs and five service aces. Freshman
Emma Dowdy (Cocoa, FL/Edgewood) dished out a season-best 46 assists to go along with seven digs.
Claire Foggo (Windham, NH/Central Catholic) added a team-best three blocks, while
Amanda White (Watertown, NY/Watertown) contributed seven digs and five kills.
Sara Anderson led Potsdam with 11 kills. Jenna Blujus added 16 assists and 11 digs.
The Tigers dropped the first two sets, 28-26, 25-11 in the final match against Medaille. The Tigers led 24-23 in the opening set, but could not put the Mavericks away. RIT rallied to win the third set, 25-22, but dropped the fourth set, 25-21.
Szybist led the way for the Tigers with 18 kills. She finished the weekend with 78 kills. Dowdy recorded 20 assists and 13 digs, while White tallied six kills, while hitting .357. Martin tallied 13 digs and six kills. Foggo recorded a team-best four blocks, while Davis tallied 20 digs. Valentine and
Lindsay Quandt (Houston, TX/Houston Christian) added 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
Jenna Cleversley led Medaille 23 digs and 17 kills. Simmone Talford dished out 45 assists, while Lydia Penberthy and Marlena Clotfelter had 13 kills each.
RIT returns to action on Sept. 20-21 at the NYU Invitational. The Tigers play NYU at 10 a.m. and UMass-Boston on Fri., Sept. 20 at 2 p.m.
