ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT volleyball team (6-4) opened play at the 25th annual RIT Volleyball Invitational held at Clark Gym on Friday by defeating Brockport (3-5) in three sets, 25-19, 25-21, 25-15. The Tigers then rallied from a two sets to one deficit to roar back and beat Keuka (4-3) 25-22, 14-25, 19-25, 25-18, 15-12 in the nightcap.
The Tigers controlled play throughout the Brockport match, hitting .253 as a team with 36 kills. In set two, RIT went down 10-7 before roaring back. With the score even at 21-21, the Tigers scored the final four points to earn the win, then cruised in the final set.
The duo of first-year hitters
Anna Valentine (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) and
Sarah Szybist (Chicago, IL/Ramstein) carried the Tigers offensively. Valentine hit .500 with a season-best 11 kills to go along with eight digs, and three service aces, while Szybist hit .458 with 14 kills and two blocks. Classmate
Emma Dowdy (Cocoa, FL/Edgewood) recorded 29 assists and nine digs. Junior
Bethany Davis (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) recorded 13 digs and three service aces, while
Claire Foggo (Windham, NH/Central Catholic) had a team-best five blocks.
Amanda Riebe led Brockport with six kills, while Jessica Senek added five. Jessica Greiner had 20 assists, while Mary Cocking added 13 digs.
Against Keuka, RIT took a commanding lead in the final set before the Storm came back to cut the lead to 14-11. On match point, Szybist and Foggo combined for the winning block, sending the big crowd home happy.
Szybist was the lone Tiger in with double figure kills, notching 21 to go along with 10 digs and three blocks.
Arielle Pariente (Twinsburg, OH/Twinsburg) dished out 21 assists, while Dowdy recorded 18 assists, 11 digs, and eight kills. Foggo compiled six blocks and added four kills, while
Sara Martin (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) recorded seven kills and
Amanda White (Watertown, NY/Watertown) hit .462 with six kills. Davis led the squad with 20 digs.
Paige Golden led the Storm with 12 kills to go along with 22 digs. Devan Curtis hit .281 with 11 kills and 18 digs. Jillian Nolan dished out 23 assists and added 10 digs.
RIT wraps up play at the RIT Invitational on Saturday, as they host Potsdam at 11 a.m. and Medaille at 3 p.m.
