PITTSFORD, NY -- The RIT women's soccer team (4-1-0) picked up its fourth win of the season with a 1-0 victory at St. John Fisher College in non-conference action from Growney Stadium on Wednesday evening. Junior
Sierra Kiss (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) tallied the game winner in the 52nd minute.
Shots were 14-6 in favor of the Tigers, with RIT taking eight corner kicks to just one for the Cardinals, who fall to 1-3-0 on the season.
Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) picked up her fourth shut out win of the season, making three saves. Brooke Seavitt took the loss for St. John Fisher, stopping six shots.
RIT generated several chances in the first half, including an opportunity by
Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport) in the seventh minute. She dribbled through the Fisher defense, sending a service into the Cardinals penalty area. Seavitt came off her line for Fisher to gobble up the loose ball and thwart the Tigers threat.
The Cardinals had a good scoring chance in the 20th minute when Taryn Guinta sent a ball into the RIT penalty area. Chelsea Oberkrieser made the run and got a foot on the service, but it went just wide of the RIT net.
RIT kept the pressure going in the second half, finally breaking through in the 52nd minute. The Tigers had a nice build up from the back that led to a flury in front of the Fisher net. Kiss got free for a shot that was blocked away. The ball rattled around the box finally coming back to Kiss. This time, she fired a shot that beat Seavitt into the right portion of the net to give RIT a 1-0 lead.
Fisher threatened with 20 seconds to play in regulation. Alex Rohloff found herself free from 12 yards out and fired a shot. Murray shuffled to her right, making the save just before time ran out.
RIT's defense has been solid all season long, allowing just one goal in five games. The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, September 18 at 4 p.m. versus SUNY Geneseo at Tiger Stadium.
