ROCHESTER, NY -- The No. 3 RIT men's lacrosse team will face No. 5 Cabrini College in the second round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship on Saturday, May 11 at 1 pm at Tiger Stadium.
The Tigers, ranked third in this week's USILA Division III poll, received a first round bye and will play their first NCAA Tournament action this afternoon.
The Cavaliers (15-3) advanced to the second round with a 20-8 win over Springfield College in the first round on Wednesday. Leading 5-4 at the start of the second quarter, Cabrini out-scored the Pride 15-4 over the next 45 minutes to advance to the second round. Corey Elmer led the Cavaliers with eight points on four goals and four assists. Bobby Thorp and Anthony DiSanzo each had three goals, while Chris Treat picked up the win in net, making eight saves.
RIT (16-2) makes its fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 15th overall. The Cavaliers are appearing in their twelfth straight NCAA Tournament.
The winner advances to the quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 15 and will face the winner between Tufts and Stevens who play on Saturday in Medford, Mass.
RIT comes into Saturday 12th in Division III in scoring averaging 14.50 goals per game. The Tigers have outscored their opponents 261-125 this season and have scored 10 or more goals in 15-of-18 games. RIT's man-up unit is tops in all of Division III, converting 40-of-70 (57.1%) chances on the season.
RIT features 10 players with 10 or more points, seven players with 20 or more points, five players with 45 or more points and four players with at least 50 points on the season.
Jack Krzyston (Bedford, NH/Bishop Guertin), the 2013 Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year, leads the team in scoring with 67 points on 43 goals and 24 assists. Krzyston scored at least one point in 17-of-18 games this season.
Kyle Aquin (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean De Brebeuf) is tied for second on the team in scoring with 56 points on a team-best 48 goals and eight assists. Sophomore
Eddie Kiesa (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) is tied with Aquin for second in scoring with 56 (32g, 24a);
Allister Warren (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern Collegiate Institute) is fourth with 52 points (33g, 19a), while #Taylor Wisman is fifth with 49 points (23g, 26a).
Defensively, RIT is 22nd in Division III allowing just 6.94 goals per game. Sophomore
Pat Johnston (Long Beach, CA/Norwell (MA)), the 2013 Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year, is 16-2 on the season with a 6.58 goals against average, and .663 save percentage. Senior defenseman
Elliott Cowburn (Oakville, ON/Holy Trinity) leads the Tigers with 21 caused turnovers, while grabbing 56 ground balls. Freshman
Matt Hossack (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry) has 13 caused turnovers and 35 ground balls. Junior
Tyler Brooks-Lambert (Seneca Castle, NY/Midlakes) has been impressive at the face-off “X”, winning 63.4 percent of his face-offs to go along with 87 ground balls.
Cabrini enters Saturday's second round contest fourth in Division III in scoring, averaging 16.89 goals per game and have outscored its opponents 304-120 this season. The Cavaliers man-up unit has scored on 23-of-75 (30.0%) of their opportunities this season.
The Cavaliers feature 12 players with 10 or more points, seven players with 30 or more points, three players with at least 45 points, and two players with more than 65 points. Corey Elmer leads the Cabrini attack with 108 points on 55 goals and 53 assists.
Bobby Thorp is second in scoring with 66 points on 42 goals and 24 assists, and Ethan Heisman is third with 45 points on 34 goals and 11 assists. Mike Leyden is fourth with 35 points (22g, 13 a) and Damian Sobieski is fifth with 34 points (25g, 9a).
Defensively, Cabrini is allowing just 6.67 goals per game and has held its opponents to 10 goals or fewer in 13-of-18 games. Freshman Chris Treat has seen the majority of the minutes in net this season for the Cavaliers, posting a 13-1 record with a 5.80 goals against average and .614 save percentage. Andrew Kvech leads the team with 28 caused turnovers, while Anthony DiNenno has been impressive at the face-off “X”, winning 65.7 percent and picking up 109 ground balls.
Ticket prices for Saturday's game are $5 for adults, $3 for students, and $1 for children. Book bags, duffle bags and coolers are not permitted in Tiger Stadium. All other bags are subject to be searched.
Saturday's game will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.
