Women's tennis falls in opening round of Liberty League Tournament to St. Lawrence

RESULTS

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT women's tennis team (1-9) was defeated by the third-seeded St. Lawrence Saints (10-5) on a sunny Friday afternoon at RIT Tennis Courts in the opening round of the Liberty League Tournament. The Saints took the decisive victory by a 6-0 final.
 
St. Lawrence swept the doubles competition, 3-0. The team of Margaret Barnstein and Lindsay Smith (Colorado Springs, CO/Ramport) fell 8-0, while Britt Amari (Sussex, NJ/Vernon Township High School) and Kristen Rice (Clyde, NY/Clyde-Savannah) were defeated 8-2. The first singles squad of Maite Vera Antelo (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Mayor San Loranzo) and Elizabeth McGrail (Rockford, IL/Guilford) pushed St. Lawrence to the brink, but fell in the tiebreaker 9-8 (7-3). The duo rallied from a 7-5 deficit but couldn't complete the comeback.

 In singles action, Shannon Murphy defeated Brooke Kaylor (Medina, OH/Medina) in straight sets and Elkie Vandenbeemt defeated McGrail while Elizabeth Geer beat Laura Arciniegas (Johnston, RI/North Smithfield) simultaneously, giving the Saints the 6-0 victory.

Meanwhile, Antelo held a 6-5 lead in second doubles over Morgan McNeal  and Rice held a 4-3 lead in the second set against Arroyo but the matches went unfinished as the Saints clinched the competition.

The loss ends the Tigers season. St. Lawrence moves on to take on Vassar in the tournament semifinals and will play the winner of the Skidmore vs. William Smith semifinal.
