Second half surge helps RIT women's lacrosse to a 16-8 win at Skidmore



SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The RIT women's lacrosse team rebounded from a loss to No. 18 Rensselaer on Friday to beat Skidmore College 16-8 in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon. #Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport)# led RIT with nine points on six goals and three assists.

Freshman #Corrina Mandell (Corning, NY/Corning East)# tallied three goals, and #Loren Azlein (Cleveland, OH/Gilmour Academy) scored twice. (Silver Spring, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel)Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima)# had a goal and two assists, while #Marlee Vlassis (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) had two goals and two assists. (Silver Spring, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel)Katelyn Crane (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon)# picked up the win in net, making seven saves.

RIT held a 39-25 shot advantage, and won the ground ball battle 23-18. The Tigers won 12-of-26 draw controls and scored two free position goals.

The Tigers led 7-3 at the half thanks in large part to a three-goal run to end the half. Goals by #Holly Leone (Centerport, NY/Harborfields)#, Mandell and Azlein gave RIT the four-goal edge at the half.

RIT opened the second half scoring four straight goals, taking an 11-3 lead on Vakiener's 53rd goal of the season off an assist from Sarkis.

The Tigers built the lead to 14-6, the largest of the game, on Vakiener's fifth tally of the game with 6:40 to play.

Skidmore went on a 12:25 scoring draught in the second half, before Caroline Bowne scored a free position goal with 6:01 to play, cutting RIT's lead to 14-7.

Vakiener's sixth goal of the afternoon off an assist from Vlassis gave the Tigers a 15-7 lead. Vakiener, RIT's all-time leader in points, goals and assists, now has 81 points on the season on 58 goals and 23 assists.

Vlassis tallied with five seconds to play off an assist from #Erin York (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeyoye Falls-Lima)# to make it a 16-8 final. York finished with a goal and an assist.

RIT returns to action on Friday, April 26 when the Tigers host St. Lawrence at 4 pm. The Tigers wrap up the regular season on Saturday, April 27 versus Clarkson at 12 pm.
