Women's lacrosse loses at home to St. Lawrence 18-13





ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (9-6, 4-4 Liberty League) women's lacrosse team was defeated by St. Lawrence University (10-5, 6-2 Liberty League) 18-13 in Liberty League action from Tiger Stadium Friday afternoon.

Freshman #Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima)# led RIT with four goals, while #Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had six points on three goals and three assists. (Silver Spring, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel)Marlee Vlassis (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa)# scored a pair of goals, and #Corrina Mandell (Corning, NY/Corning East) and Loren Azlein (Cleveland, OH/Gilmour Academy) each had a goal and two assists. (Silver Spring, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel)Katelyn Crane (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon)# took the loss in net, making four saves.

RIT held a 34-29 shot advantage, while St. Lawrence won the ground ball battle 27-19. The Tigers won just 11-of-33 draw controls and were 0-for-4 on free position attempts.

Brigid Hurley, Hannah Calvelli and Stephanie O'Rourke each had four goals to lead the Saints.  Carly VanTassel had two goals and dished out four assists, and Adden Cunningham picked up the win in net for St. Lawrence, making 11 saves.

RIT scored the first goal of the game at the 29:44 mark, when Vakiener drove to the net, scoring her 59th goal of the season.

The Saints took control of the game from that point through the remainder of the first half, rattling off six straight goals. O'Rourke and Calvelli each scored twice in that stretch for the Saints.

Sarkis broke the run by the Saints with her 39th goal of the season at the 16:37 mark of the first half off an assist from Azlein. That cut St. Lawrence's lead to 6-2.

St. Lawrence added six more first-half goals, while the Tigers added four tallies, trailing 12-6 at the half. Sarkis scored three of RIT's six first-half goals.

RIT pulled to within four goals of St. Lawrence three times in the second half. The first came with 23:30 to play in regulation when Azlein scored off an assist from #Ashleigh Caruso (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool)# to make it 13-9 Saints. The second came at the 20:46 mark of the half when #Erin York (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeyoye Falls-Lima)# scored off an assist from Vakiener making it 14-10 St. Lawrence. Vakiener made it 16-12 St. Lawrence with 16:40 to play on her second goal of the game.

Vlassis and Vakiener each had good chances to cut the lead down further, but both their shots rang off the post.

The Saints would take advantage of the Tigers misses, scoring consecutive goals from VanTassel and Mackenzie Collins to put the game out of reach.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, April 27 when the Tigers host Clarkson in the season finale at 3 pm. The Tigers will honor the class of 2013 prior to the game at Tiger Stadium.
