Kyle Aquin's five goals leads No. 3 RIT men's lacrosse to 14-7 win at Union

SCHENECTADY, NY – Sophomore Kyle Aquin (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean De Brebeuf) scored five goals, and the Tigers defensive unit turned in another stifling performance, as the No. 3 RIT (12-2, 4-0 Liberty League) men's lacrosse team won its sixth straight game, defeating Union College (6-6, 1-3 Liberty League) 14-7 in Liberty League action on Wednesday afternoon.

Aquin finished with five points on five goals, giving him a team-best 41 for the season. Taylor Wisman (Seattle, WA/Inglemoor) tallied four points on a goal and three assists, and Jack Krzyston (Bedford, NH/Bishop Guertin) had four goals and an assist for the Tigers who came into the game eighth in all of Division III in scoring, averaging 15.31 goals per game. Eddie Kiesa (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) dished out three assists, while Pat McMullan (Easton, PA/Wyoming Seminary) and Allister Warren (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern Collegiate Institute) each had a goal and an assist.

Shots were 44-32 in favor of Union, while RIT held a slight 29-28 ground ball edge. The Tigers, who came into the game ranked second in the country in man-up offense converting 52.5 percent of their chances, were 3-for-5 on man-up chances Wednesday.

Pat Johnston (Long Beach, CA/Norwell (MA)), who is sixth in save percentage among Division III goalies, picked up his 12th win of the season making 14 saves in net for the Tigers. RIT's defense held an opponent to under 10 goals for the 11th time in 14 games this season.

The Tigers won 13-of-24 face-offs led by Tyler Brooks-Lambert (Seneca Castle, NY/Midlakes), who won 8-of-14 draws, and had five ground balls. PJ Hart (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) won 5-of-10 face-offs and had two ground balls.

Nolan Stauffer gave Union an early 1-0 lead on his seventh goal of the season at the 9:34 mark of the opening quarter. RIT answered back, scoring three straight goals to close out the quarter.

Krzyston got RIT on the board on his 35th tally of the season off an assist from Wisman with 7:08 to play in the first. Aquin scored his 13th man-up goal of the season and 37th goal overall giving RIT a 2-1 lead. Krzyston closed out the quarter with his second goal of the game to make it 3-1 Tigers.

Aquin opened the scoring in the second quarter with his 38th goal of the season off an assist from Warren to increase the Tigers lead to 4-1.

After a Nolan Connors goal cut RIT's lead to 4-2, Pat McMullan (Easton, PA/Wyoming Seminary) scored off an assist from Braden Wallace (Oakville, Ontario/Abbey Park) at the 10:37 mark of the second quarter, increasing RIT's lead to 5-2. Goals by Krzyston and Wisman gave RIT its largest lead of the game at 7-2 to that point, and RIT's defense turned in another impressive half, allowing just two goals. Johnston made eight first-half saves.

Greg Mooney opened the third-quarter scoring for Union with a goal at 14:24 to cut RIT's lead to 7-3. Two straight man-up goals by Aquin increased the Tigers lead to 9-3 with 10:42 to play in the third. He now has 15 man-up goals on the season and leads the Tigers with 41 total goals.

The Dutchmen answered back, tallying consecutive goals and pulled to within four goals on a Nolan Connors goal with 6:03 to play in the third, but RIT answered right back with goals by Kiesa and Aquin to give the Tigers an 11-5 lead.

After an Adam Rosenthal goal made 11-6 RIT, Mac Keehfus (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) and Warren each scored to close out the third quarter, giving the Tigers a 13-6 lead. Each team scored in the fourth quarter making it a 14-7 final.

Connors and Greenberg led Union with two goals apiece. Stefan Basile took the loss in net for the Dutchmen, making five saves.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, April 20 when the Tigers face Skidmore College at 5 p.m. in Saratoga Springs, New York.
