RIT women's lacrosse loses to Geneseo in overtime



ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (2-1) women's lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the season on Tuesday, losing to SUNY Geneseo (2-0) 15-14 in overtime from a frosty Turf Field on the campus of RIT. Geneseo's Katey Hart scored with 1:59 to play in the second overtime session to give the Blue Knights the win.

RIT's #Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport)# led the Tigers with eight points on six goals and two assists, while freshman #Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima)# scored three goals, and #Holly Leone (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) and Marlee Vlassis (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa)# each tallied two goals.

Katey Hart paced Geneseo with six points on five goals and an assist. Caroline Buonocore had four goals, and Meredith Weber, Emily Hagerty and Kylie Caesar each scored two goals.

Geneseo held a slight 33-31 edge on shots, and had 29 ground balls to 12 for the Tigers. Draw controls were even at 16-16, while RIT went 7-of-12 on free position attempts, and Geneseo was 1-of-5.

Julie Bernatzky picked up the win in goal for Geneseo, allowing 14 goals and making 12 saves. #Katelyn Crane (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon)# took the loss for RIT allowing 15 goals and making 11 saves.

Tied 7-7 at halftime, Geneseo scored four straight goals midway through the second half, taking a 13-10 lead on a goal by Hart off an assist from Caesar. It was the Blue Knights largest lead of the game.

RIT answered back with a three-goal run of their own, tying the score at 13-13 on Vakiener's free position goal with 3:35 to play in regulation. Vlassis started the run with two straight goals, one off an assist from Vakiener, and the other a free position goal with 6:27 to play that cut Geneseo's lead to 13-12.

RIT had a chance to score late in regulation, on an extended offensive possession. But, Bernatzky made some key stops for Geneseo, and RIT missed some shots that kept the game tied and sent it into overtime.

Vakiener opened the first overtime with her sixth goal of the game, that gave RIT a 14-13 lead. Hart answered for Geneseo with 1:21 to play in the first overtime session, tying the score at 14-14. Hart then scored with 1:59 to play in the second overtime session to give the Knights a 15-14 lead. The Knights defense held RIT out of the net and held on for the win.

RIT had a good chance late in the overtime session, but the Tigers turned the ball over going to the net and Geneseo was able to gain possession and run out the clock.

The Tigers return to action on Monday, March 11 when the Tigers host SUNY Oswego at 4 p.m. on RIT's Turf Field.
