SYRACUSE, NY – Senior forward #
Tenecia Hiller (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Thunder)# became the 11th player in the history of the RIT women's hockey program to record 100 career points, but it wasn't enough, as the Tigers (12-13-5, 5-6-5 AHA) fell at CHA rival Syracuse (18-11-1, 12-3-1 CHA) 2-1 at Tennity Ice Pavillion on Saturday night.
Hiller tallied the historic point, assisting on a power-play goal by #
Kourtney Kunichika (Fullerton, CA/LA Selects)# late in the second period. She now leads the team with 22 points this season and has 39 goals and 61 assists in 117 career games.
In net, #
Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs)# started and played well, stopping 24-of-26 shots, including a glorious save on a penalty shot early in the second period. She left the game 14:40 into the second period after a collision in front of her net. #
Laura Chamberlain (Norco, CA/LA Selects)# replaced her in goal and played 24 minutes, stopping all eight shots she faced.
RIT held Syracuse to just four third period shots, with #
Kristina Moss (Webster, NY/Buffalo Bisons)# hitting the post with a drive from the point in the final moments. The Tigers pulled Chamberlain with two minutes left and held the puck in the Orange zone for the majority of the time, but could not get the tying goal.
RIT was 1-for-5 with the man-advantage, while Syracuse was 0-for-5.
Syracuse out-shot RIT 34-19. Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and Margot Scharfe scored for the Orange. Kallie Billadeau made 18 saves to pick up the win.
The Orange dominated play in the opening period, out-shooting RIT 13-4 to take a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.
Syracuse got on the board just 54 seconds into tonight's game, as Carrie-Mattimoe deflected a point shot from Akane Hosoyamada past Binnington for her 10th goal of the season. Danielle Leslie also assisted on the goal.
Binnington came up with a handful of big saves later in the period to keep it 1-0. The Tigers did not record their first shot of game until after the 10 minute mark of the first period.
Scharfe scored the eventual game-winner at the 7:53 mark of the second period, firing a shot from close range past Binnington. Melissa Piacentini and Cara Johnson assisted on the goal.
Syracuse nearly made it 3-0 moments later, as Carrie-Mattimoe was awarded a penalty shot. She came in and tried to deke Binnington to the forehand, but the RIT goaltender stuck her stick out to poke the opportunity away.
The Tigers got on the board on the power-play with 1:11 left in the period, as Kunichika slammed in a loose puck in front for her eighth goal of the season. #
Kim Schlattman (Stratford, Ontario/Cambridge Fury)# centered a pass that Hiller swatted at in front. Kuncihika was on the door step for the goal.
Senior defenseman #
Ellesha Fortuna (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Barracudas)# played in her 100th career game this evening.
RIT is now 0-3-1 against Syracuse this season. Syracuse won all three games against RIT by identical 2-1 scores. On Nov. 10, the two teams skated to a 2-2 draw at Ritter Arena, and 10 days later, Syracuse defeated the Tigers 2-1 in overtime.
The Tigers return to action on Friday and Saturday, as they play their final two regular season home games against CHA foe Penn State. Both games get underway at 7:05 p.m.
