Baseball picks up first win of the 2013 season, 11-3 over No. 25 Farmingdale State

The RIT baseball team picked up its first win of the 2013 season in resounding fashion, defeating No. 25 Farmingdale State by a score of 11-3 at Lake Myrtle Field as part of the RussMatt Baseball Classic on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers scored in each of the first five innings en route to a 10-1 lead. RIT recorded 15 hits and took advantage of four Farmingdale State errors to scored seven unearned runs.

RIT scored two in the first on a bases loaded walk from Ronnie Canestro (East Amherst, NY/Nichols) and a run-scoring single by Tyler Ramotar (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake). After Skip Flanagan (Framingham, MA/Bishop Feehan) tacked on a run with a run scoring single in the second, RIT opened the game up with three third inning runs. Ramotar drove ina  run with a double, while Tyler Hogan singled in a run, and Jaren Bell (Rochester, NY/Brighton) had a RBI ground out.

Canestro was 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored, and three RBI's. Ramotar was 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs batted in. Brian Brazee (Auburn, NY/Auburn) was 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI, while Taylor Hogan (Rochester, NY/Brighton) was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Walt Roman (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and was hit by pitch two times. Roman has now been hit by a pitch 45 times in his collegiate career.

Michael Burns (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) picked up his first win of the season, scattering seven hits and three runs, while striking out seven batters. Brian Sheridan (Trumansburg, NY/Trumansburg) came in to get a big out in the sixth inning, keeping Farmingdale at bay. He also pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Rory Little (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Chris Dickinson (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively to close out the win.

Mike Scarlato was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in for Farmingdale.

RIT is off Tuesday, but returns to action on Wednesday, with a single game against SUNY Canton that gets underway at 2:30 p.m.
