WILKES-BARRE, PA – The RIT wrestling team opened the 2013-14 season with a fifth-place finish out of 13 teams at the Monarch Invitational hosted by King's College on Saturday afternoon with 56.5 points. Cortland State won the team title with 105.5 points.

Brad Mayville (Marion, NY/Wayne)#, the No. 2 seed at 149 lbs., finished as the runner-up. He started the day with a 7-2 win over Thomas Carta of Cortland before defeating Nicholas Heck of Oneonta by a fall in 34 seconds. In the semifinals, he needed overtime to defeat Seth Lansberry of Lycoming by a pin. In the championship, Mayville fell to top-seed Mark Hartenstine of Wiles, 8-6.
Junior #
Tory Cain (Ontario, NY/Wayne)# won seven of his eight matches on the afternoon, including six straight in the consolation round. After losing to No. 3 seed Tommy Desir of King's, Cain won matches by scores of 3-0, 3-1, 7-2, a technical fall score of 16-1, and 7-2 to advance to the third place match. From there, Cain defeated Sonnieboy Blanco of Washington and Jefferson, 4-2.

Mike Nguyen (Syracuse, NY/Jordan-Elbridge)# had a strong day at 133 lbs., going 5-2 to just miss placing. He won four straight matches before falling to Andrew Gipe of Lycoming, 3-2 in overtime.

Jake Harvey (LeRoy, NY/LeRoy) and
Nicholas Greenquist (Spring Lake, NJ/St. Rose)# won their first three matches of the day in their respective weight classes. Harvey had a technical fall and pin at 149 lbs., while Greenquist wrestled at 174 lbs.

Won Kim (Millbrae, CA/Mills)# won the first three matches of his collegiate career, including one by a pin at 141 lbs., while #
Tyler Brent (Gasport, NY/Royalton-Hartland)# went 3-2 with a pair of pins at 184 lbs.

Jake Sepor (Stafford, NY/Pavilion)# went 2-2 at 141 lbs., earning a technical fall and pin. #
Evan Vershay (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) recorded his first collegiate win at 157 lbs. (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy)Tim Thurnau (Nampa, ID/Nampa)# picked up a pair of wins at 197 lbs.
