EWING, NJ -- For the first time in the program's history, the RIT women's soccer team (12-4-4) will play in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. On Saturday, the Tigers survived a 0-0 double overtime draw versus MIT in the first round and advanced 4-3 on penalty kicks. RIT will face The College of New Jersey in the second round on Sunday, November 17 at 1:30 p.m. on the campus of TCNJ.
"It is great to advance and play another game," said RIT head coach #
Liz Masterson#. "It was a game coming into we were confident that we could win and advance."
Sophomore #
Ehlana Gray (Sewickley, PA/Avonworth)# scored the game winning penalty kick, beating MIT goalkeeper Hannah Zlotnick to send the Tigers onto the second round.
Shots were 10-8 in favor of RIT, while the Tigers took six corner kicks to two for the Engineers who finish their season with a 13-2-6 record.
Junior #
Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls)# picked up her tenth shut out of the season and made two huge saves in the penalty kicks session. Lauren Ullmann made six saves in net for the Engineers.
It was an evenly matched first half that saw MIT hold a slight 2-1 shot advantage. Action picked up in the second half as both teams began generating chances.
"These were two evenly matched teams," said Masterson. "We would control play for a bit, then they would control play."
Michaelann Rodriguez had the Engineers first good chance with 38 minutes to play in the second half when her header off a MIT free kick sailed just wide of the RIT post.

Caitlyn Daly (Glendora, CA/St. Lucy's Priory) and
Gwen Neuhaus (Woodbridge, VA/Potomac)# had long shots for the Tigers in the second half that Ullmann was able to see and make the saves.
With time winding down in the second half, MIT's Ambika Krishnamachar got free inside the RIT penalty area and fired a shot from 15 yards out that Murray was able to save.
With a little under five minutes to play in regulation, Neuhaus sent a service in from 30 yards out that #
Maxine Culhane (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville)# got a head on, but sent the shot just wide of the MIT net.

Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport)# had a header from 10 yards out inside the last two minutes of regulation that Ullmann was able to save.
"We had a couple of really good scoring chances," said Masterson. "We just couldn't quite finish them."
RIT had two corner kicks in the first overtime period, but could not convert.
In the second overtime, the Tigers really applied the pressure offensively applying some good pressure on the MIT defense.

Elena Wolfe (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany)# had a great chance when she got free at the top of the MIT box and fired a shot that an Engineer defender deflected wide.
The Tigers kept the pressure on and Gray found herself alone on the flank with the MIT goalie. Ullmann came off her line to cut the angle down and made a great save on a shot by Gray that was headed for the righ post.
MIT had a chance late in the second overtime when Michelle Battipaglia got around a RIT defender and sent a shot across and wide of the RIT goal mouth.
In the penalty kicks session, Murray stopped MIT's first attempt. #
Jamie Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel)# buried her attempt to give RIT an early edge. Both teams exchanged goals in the second round of PK's, before Murray came up big again in the third round, making another great save. After a RIT miss, Morgan Morol made for MIT, tying it at 2-2. #
Quincey Ornellas (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark)# buried a shot for RIT and after another MIT make, Gray scored the decisive goal to send RIT to the second round.
"We were in a simialr situation last year," said Masterson. "I think the experience of playing in a game like that played a big part in our preparation and handling of today."
Sunday's second round game will be the first ever meeting between RIT and The College of New Jersey. The winner of tomorrow's game will face the winner between No. 3 William Smith and SUNY Oneonta in the Round of 16 in the 2013 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship.
