Women's soccer falls to College of New Jersey 1-0 in second round of NCAA Tournament

EWING, NJ -- The RIT women's soccer team (12-5-4) put up a valiant effort, but came up a goal short, losing to The College of New Jersey (18-2-2) 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship Sunday afternoon at Lion's Stadium on the campus of TCNJ.

"It was an amazing game,'' said RIT Head Coach Liz Masterson. "A great performance by our team especially after playing 110 minutes yesterday. We showed tremendous heart and fight today and I could not be any more proud of this team."

Taylor Lusardi scored the game winner in the 74th minute off a corner kick to advance the Lions to the Round of 16 where they will face the winner between William Smith and SUNY Oneonta next weekend.

Shots were 15-4 in favor of TCNJ, while the Lions took five corner kicks to none for the Tigers. #Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls)# played a great game in net for RIT, making eight saves. Kendra Griffith got the win for TCNJ, making one save.

After TCNJ controlled play early in the first half, RIT responded with a few minues of pressure on the Lions defense. #Quincey Ornellas (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark) and Sierra Kiss (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit)# each had runs into the box, placing the Lion's defense under pressure.

Late in the first half, #Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland)# fired a shot from 25 yards out that Griffith was able to gobble up and save.

Christine Levering had a good chance for TCNJ late in the first half with a great shot that Murray was able to reach for and save keeping the game scoreless at halftime.

Murray made another great save in the opening minute of the second half when Shannon White got free and fired a shot.

Katie Lindacher got free for the Lion's with a drive down the right side. She fired a shot that Murray made the diving save on, keeping the Lion's off the board.

With 16:40 to play in regulation Jordan Downs sent a ball into the RIT box that Lusardi was abel to elevate over the RIT defense and head down inside the right post to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

RIT fought back down the stretch, generating a couple good chances.

#Sierra Kiss (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit)# drove down the right flank with 8:15 to play. She dribbled around the Lions defense and got the end line, sending a service into the TCNJ box. #Caitlyn Daly (Glendora, CA/St. Lucy's Priory)# gathered the loose ball but could not quite get a shot off as the Lion's defense held strong.

Inside the last minute, #Kiana Richards (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake)# made a run down the right flank, centering a ball into the penalty area. The ball rattled around inside the box before being cleared away by Gina Caprara.

This was RIT's best ever showing in the NCAA Tournament and the second straight season the Tigers have made the NCAA Tournament.
