Men's soccer has four-game unbeaten streak snapped with 1-0 loss to Vassar

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men's soccer team (5-4-1, 2-1-0 Liberty League) had its four-game unbeaten streak snapped with a 1-0 loss to Vassar College (6-3-3, 1-0-2 Liberty League) in Liberty League action from Tigers Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Vassar's Juliano Pereira scored the lone goal in the 65th minute on a free kick from 25 yards out.

Shots were 18-8 in favor of RIT. The Tigers took six corner kicks to two for the Brewers. Mark Reeves (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) took the loss in net for RIT, making two saves. Ryan Grimmer got the win for Vassar, making three saves.

RIT generated some good scoring chances early in the first half. Danny Bloshkin (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) ripped a free kick from 20 yards out that looked to be headed for the far corner, but Grimme dove and made the save. Bloshkin had another great chance off a free kick with 16 minutes to play in the first half, but Grimmer made another good save to keep the game scoreless.

Gavin Jennings had a great chance for the Brewers early in the first half, but Reeves tipped his free kick from just outside the RIT penalty area over the cross bar and out of play.

Early in the second half, Reuben Marquez dribbled his way through and around the Vassar defense and centered a pass that Coty Winchell (Belfast, NY/Belfast) just sailed over the cross bar and out of play.

Evan Seltzer had a good chance for the Brewers when he got free, but his shot with the outside of his foot went well wide of the RIT net.

Pereira finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the 65th minute off a free kick. He bent a shot up and around the RIT wall and into the far corner passed a diving Reeves for his sixth goal of the season and a 1-0 Vassar lead.

Geno Rocco (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) generated a good chance for RIT with a little under 10 minutes to play in regulation when he dribbled past and around three Brewers defenders and sent a service into the box that Winchell gathered and fired, but Grimmer was there to make the save.

Andy Fleckenstein (Farmington, NY/Victor) had a chance for RIT inside the last two minutes off a corner kick, but his shot was blocked away by the Brewers defense.

The loss was the first in five games for the Tigers, who were 3-0-1 coming into today's action. RIT returns to action on Wednesday, October 9 when the Tigers face SUNY Geneseo at 4 p.m. in Geneseo, N.Y.
