Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Joe Venniro - Executive Director of Sports Information

Despite firing 55 shots on goal, women's hockey squanders late lead in overtime loss to Brown

ROCHESTER, NY – Despite firing a season-high 55 shots on goal, the RIT women's hockey team (4-5-0) squandered a late third period lead en route to falling in overtime by a score of 2-1 to the Brown University Bears (1-1-0) on Saturday afternoon at Ritter Arena.

Jessica Hoyle scored an unassisted goal with 2:40 left in regulation, while Maddie Woo tallied on the power-play with 1:47 left in overtime to complete the comeback for Brown, who picks up its first win of the 2013-14 season.

Brown goaltender Aubree Moore was sensational, stopping 54-of-55 shots to earn the game's first star. She made 17 saves in the first period, 21 in the second, and 16 in the third, thwarting several grade "A" scoring chances by RIT all afternoon.

Down 1-0 late in the third, Hoyle intercepted a clearing attempt in the slot after a blocked shot and put a hard shot just inside the right post past RIT goaltender #Brooke Stoddart (Elmvale, Ontario/Elmvale)#, who was making her collegiate debut.

In overtime, RIT was assessed a too many players on the ice penalty with 2:04 left, giving Brown a power-play. Off the ensuing face-off, Jennifer Nedow fired a shot from the point that deflected off Erin Conway in front right to Woo, who was all alone at the right side of the net. Woo calmly deposited the loose puck into the open net for the win.

#Lindsay Grigg (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Hornets)# scored a second period power-play goal for the Tigers, who fall to 0-5-0 on Saturday this season. They are 4-0-0 on Friday.

In net, #Brooke Stoddart (Elmvale, Ontario/Elmvale)# made her collegiate debut, stopping 17 of 19 shots. She was 2:40 away from both her first collegiate win and shutout.

RIT was 1-for-7 with the man-advantage, while Brown was 1-for-5.

"We need to put teams away on the second day of back-to-back weekends," said RIT head coach #Scott McDonald#. "We dominated in every facet of the game, except the final score. Give their goaltender full credit, she played tremendous, but we also have to do a much better job burying our chances in front. We missed quite a few open nets and we need to get this solved, especially with league play coming up."

Moore was the story of the first period, stopping all 17 RIT shots she faced, including several in spectacular fashion. Her best save came late in the period, as she robbed #Kolbee McCrea (Wawa, Ontario/Burlington Barracudas)# right in front of the net twice. McCrea looked to have a wide open net on her second attempt, but Moore slid the left pad in quick fashion to keep the puck out.

Moore also made a great save just moments into the game on #Jess Paton (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers) who took a feed from (Brantford, Ontario/Assumption Collegiate)Erin Zach (Elmira, Ontario/Cambridge Fury)# in the slot and whistled a hard shot that the Brown goalie kept out.

Stoddart was not tested often, but she had to make a nifty pad save on Lauren Vella off a hard slap shot from the high slot. Maddie Woo looked to have an open net on the power-play in front, but her shot attempt went wide.

Moore continued to keep the Tigers off the board in the second period, making tremendous save upon tremendous save. She stopped 21-of-22 second period shots.

Grigg finally broke through on the power-play with 7:29 left in the period, using a perfect screen from McCrea to put a shot from the slot past Moore on the power-play to make it 1-0 Tigers. Moore made saves on McCrea and #Kourtney Kunichika (Fullerton, CA/LA Selects) in front before the puck made it to (Brantford, Ontario/Assumption Collegiate)Morgan Scoyne (Drumbo, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres)# at the left point. She fed Grigg, whose buried the low shot past Moore for her first goal of the season.

That goal seemed to energize Brown, who would carry the play at times later in the period.

Stoddart had to come up big with just under six minutes left in the period, robbing Brittany Moorehead from point-blank range. With 3:25 left in the period, Hunter Davis wristed a screen shot from the left point that eluded Stoddart, but hit the right post and came out. The goal light came on, but it was ruled the puck never crossed the goal line.

Kunichika had three great chances on the power-play right at the outset of the third period to make it 2-0. She missed an open net on a carom off the boards and had two great chances in front denied by Moore. Moore made one of the saves with her right leg with her back turned to Kunichika.

RIT is 6-6-1 all-time against Brown, 3-1-0 at the Division I level. Last night, #Celeste Brown (Great Falls, MT/National Sports Academy) scored a pair of goals to lead the Tigers to a 2-1 win over the Bears. (Brantford, Ontario/Assumption Collegiate)Kourtney Kunchika# played in her 100th collegiate game, while #Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs)# made 18 saves to pick up her fourth win of the season.

Last season, the Tigers won a pair of road games against Brown by scores of 2-0 and 2-1.

The Tigers are off next weekend. The squad returns to action on Nov. 8-9 with a pair of games at Lindenwood University to kick off College Hockey America play.
