Women's hockey opens up conference play with shutout win at Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, MO – In its first road game in over a month, the RIT women's hockey team (5-5-0, 1-0-0 CHA) scored three third period goals to snap a scoreless tie and defeat Lindenwood University (0-10-1, 0-1-1 CHA) 3-0 in the College Hockey America opener for both teams on Friday evening.

MacKenzie Stone (Kars, Ontario/South Carleton) got the scoring started for the Tigers with a goal just 37 seconds into the third period. Nearly 10 minutes later #Cassie Clayton (Pickering, Ontario/PEAC School)# would add a second goal for the Tigers, her second of the season, giving RIT the 2-0 lead. Just 15 seconds later, #Marissa Maugeri (Ajax, Ontario/Durham West Lightning)# added the third and final RIT goal to cap off the scoring for the night.

RIT goaltender #Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs)# played a fantastic game in net facing 23 shots from Lindenwood, but holding strong to earn her third shutout of the season and the 11th of her career.

Through the first 10 minutes of play, RIT controlled the tempo of the game giving themselves several great scoring chances and outshooting the Lions 6-3. However, Lindenwood made the first period more interesting by taking over offensively for the next few minutes and getting several good looks at a goal themselves.

Lindenwood would out-shoot RIT 8-7 over the scoreless opening period.

As the puck was dropped to start the second period of play, the attack was on for RIT as they quickly went to work on offense. Within the first seven minutes the Tigers ballooned their shot total to 20 as they were active in front of Lindenwood net. In the final minute of the period #Kolbee McCrea (Wawa, Ontario/Burlington Barracudas)# tried to score on a wrap around goal on Hensley's left side but she was denied and after slashing penalties by each team the period would end with a 0-0 score.

The third period began with a bang for the Tigers as just 37 seconds in, Stone would knock in the first goal of the game on an RIT power play carried over from the previous period. That goal seemed to be the spark that RIT needed as their offense came alive. With just under 10 minutes remaining in the game the Tigers would find pay dirt again with another power play goal off the stick of Clayton out in front of the net. Seconds later Maugeri would add the third and final goal of the game to give RIT the 3-0 win.

RIT outshot Lindenwood 35-23 and were also able kill all nine Lions power plays, while scoring on two of their own.

RIT is now 2-1-2 all-time against Lindenwood and grabbed their first win over the Lions since early December of last year, a game they won 5-1.

The two game set at Lindenwood picks up tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. eastern time, as the Tigers will look to complete the sweep, and grab their first win on a Saturday this season.
