Women's hockey loses overtime heartbreaker to Colgate

ROCHESTER, NY – Liz Trautz scored on a 5-on-3 power-play 2:12 into the overtime session to give Colgate (2-4-0) a 2-1 victory over the RIT women's hockey team (3-4-0) in front of 738 fans at Ritter Arena on Saturday evening.

RIT opened the period on a power-play and looked to end it just 15 seconds in, as #Kolbee McCrea (Wawa, Ontario/Burlington Barracudas)# had a golden opportunity from right in front of the net go off her stick. Seconds later, McCrea was given an interference penalty.

While RIT was killing off that penalty, #Celeste Brown (Great Falls, MT/National Sports Academy)# was whistled for a body checking penalty. RIT would not be able to clear the puck out on the ensuing 5-on-3. From the slot, Nicole Gass fired a shot that Trautz redirected past RIT goaltender #Jetta Rackleff (Bend, OR/Summit)# for the game-winner.

RIT out-shot Colgate 41-29. Both goalies were tremendous all evening. Colgate's Ashlynne Rando made 40 saves and was named the game's first star. Rackleff, who made her collegiate debut, was very good between the pipes for RIT, stopping 27 shots. She was named the game's second star.

Colgate scored both goals on the power-play, going 2-for-8. RIT, despite firing 13 shots with the man-advantage, were 0-for-7.

Neither team scored in a quickly played first period, where each team fired 13 shots on goal.

RIT held the majority of zone play over the first 10 minutes, while Colgate battled back to have an edge over the last half of the period.

#Marissa Maugeri (Ajax, Ontario/Durham West Lightning)# had two great chances in the first two minutes. She came in on a 2-on-1 and had her shot from the right side stopped by Rando. Moments later, she had a great chance in front stopped by Rando.

Rackleff, making her first collegiate start, had to come up big on a scramble in front later in the period. Kayla Haus fired a shot from the left side that Rackleff stopped. The rebound came to Katelyn Parker who had a chance stopped by the goaltender.  Haus had a second chance in front that Rackleff gobbled up.

Both teams scored once in a lively second period, in which RIT held a 15-13 edge in shots.

Rackleff had to come up big early in the period while Colgate was on a power-play, as she robbed Stephanie Giannopolous from point-blank range.

Colgate got on the board at the 7:37 mark, as Craig whacked in a loose puck from the slot past Rackleff for her second goal of the season. Megan Wickens and Nicole Gass assisted on the goal.

Just 1:15 later, Kunichika tipped in a shot from Maugeri through the legs of Rando for her fifth goal of the season. #Lauren Klein (Shoreview, MN/Mounds View)# had a shot from the point blocked right to Maugeri in the slot. Maugeri wheeled and fired a shot that Kunichika, standing in front, tipped through the pads of Rando.

RIT held the play in the third period, out-shooting Colgate, 12-1. The Tigers had several good chances on three straight power-plays during the frame, but were unable to get the puck past Rando.

Last night, RIT scored two goals just over five minutes apart in the second period to earn a 2-0 win over the Raiders at Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex on the campus of Monroe Community College. #Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs)# made 24 saves to earn her 10th career shutout for RIT.

RIT is 14-5-1 against Colgate, 1-3-0 in the Division I era. Last season, The Tigers dropped a pair of one-goal games against the Raiders.

RIT continues its six-game October home stand on Friday and Saturday against Brown University. Friday's game gets underway at 7 p.m.
