ROCHESTER, NY – Freshmen #
Mackenzie Stone (Kars, Ontario/South Carleton) and
Lauren Klein (Shoreview, MN/Mounds View)# tallied their first collegiate goals, while goaltender #
Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs)# stopped all 24 shots she faced to record her 10th career shutout, as the RIT women's hockey team (3-3-0) shut out Colgate University (1-4-0), 2-0 at the Bill Gray's Iceplex at Monroe Community College in front of 1,000 fans on Friday evening.
RIT was the designated road team in the contest, despite the game being played just 10 minutes off campus at MCC. This weekend is the annual "Fire on Ice" Hockey Tournament, a weekend for girl's and women's hockey in the greater Rochester area.
The goals by Stone and Klein came just over five minutes apart. RIT got off to a sluggish start in the first period, but allowed just 13 shots over the final two periods for its second shutout of the 2013-14 season and second in a week.
Colgate out-shot RIT, 24-22 for the game. The Tigers were 1-for-5 with the man-advantage and held the Raiders scoreless in six power-play attempts.
Binnington was solid in goal for RIT, turning aside all 24 shots she faced for her second shutout in a week and 10th in 43 career games. She kept RIT in the game with a handful of big saves in the first period, when RIT was out-shot 11-4.
Susan Allen, a Rochester native, made 20 saves in defeat for the Raiders.
"After a very slow start, we found our legs and competed much better as the game went on," said RIT Head Coach #
Scott McDonald#. "We capitalized on a few plays in the second period, which was the difference. Overall, I thought it was a really good, hard-fought game played by two evenly matched teams. Fortunately for us, we got a few more bounces."
After a slow start, RIT scored the all important first goal 4:40 into the second period, just after a 5-on-3 power-play turned into a 5-on-4. #
Jess Paton (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers) wheeled the puck down low to (Brantford, Ontario/Assumption Collegiate)Kourtney Kunichika (Fullerton, CA/LA Selects)#. Kunichika then whipped a perfect pass to Stone, who was all alone at the right side of the net for an easy tap-in.
Just over five minutes later, #
Carly Payerl (Kitchener, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) and
Kolbee McCrea (Wawa, Ontario/Burlington Barracudas)# came in on a 2-on-1 break. Payerl's pass eluded McCrea, bouncing off the boards. McCrea would corral the loose puck and feed Klein at the left point. Klein's seeing-eye shot went through traffic and eluded everyone, including Allen, bouncing off the post and in to make it 2-0.
From there, RIT continued to pressure, generating several good chances and the defense stiffened up, allowing little in the way from Colgate. The Tigers killed off a 6-on-3 and 4-on-4 power-play over the final 2:26 to secure the shut out win.
RIT is 14-4-1 against Colgate, snapping a four-game winless streak against the Raiders. Last season, The Tigers dropped a pair of one-goal games against the Raiders. Colgate defeated RIT 2-1 at Starr Rink and 3-2 in overtime at Ritter Arena. RIT held a lead in both games.
The two teams wrap up their regular season series on Saturday night at Ritter Arena. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
