CANTON, NY --  The RIT (5-5-2, 2-2-0 Liberty League) men's soccer team fell to No. 19 St. Lawrence University (8-1-2, 4-0-0 Liberty League) in Liberty League action from Sandy MacAllaster Field on Saturday afternoon. Austin Roney scored the game's lone goal in the 20th minute for the Saints.

Shots were 11-9 in favor of the Saints. St. Lawrence took three corner kicks to two for the Tigers. Sophomore Mark Reeves (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) took the loss in net for RIT, making three saves. Aaron Costello picked up the win for the Saints, making five saves.

RIT slowly got into an offensive rhythm in the opening half and was creating several good scoring opportunities. Coty Winchell (Belfast, NY/Belfast) received a pass inside of the right side of the 18-yard box, cut the ball back to his left foot and hit a hard shot to the opposite corner. Costello however, dove backwards and was able to deflect the ball over the crossbar.

Despite RIT's solid play in the first half, it was St. Lawrence that was able to break through, taking a 1-0 lead on Roney's first goal of the season off a restart. Andrew Bednarsky launched a perfectly placed ball to the opposite corner, where Roney one-touched a sliding shot past Reeves to give his team the 1-0 lead.

Jimmy Forbes (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) and John Kaddo (Troy, NY/Averill Park) made a nice give-and-go play in the 25th minute to get through the Saints defense. Kaddo had a good look, but Costello made a quick challenge to deny his shot.

RIT had a few other opportunities to score in the second half, but none would fall.  St. Lawrence and Costello got a little bit of luck in the 66th minute, when Bobby Spear (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) fired a low shot from just outside the 18-yard box the went beyond the outstretched hands of a diving Costello, hitting the far post.

Reeves would come up with a big save in 82nd minute when a pass from Balakumeran gave smith another open shot.  Reeves came out to challenge and deflected Smith's shot out of bounds.

St. Lawrence nearly scored again in the last few minutes as Provost found Morgan Smith on the opposite side of the field for an open look on net.  RIT defender Andy Fleckenstein (Farmington, NY/Victor) made a nice slide tackle to push the ball away from Smith.

RIT returns to action on Friday, October 18 when the Tigers face Skidmore College at 4 p.m. in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
