ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT men's swimming and diving team (6-2) fell to the University of Rochester by a score of 165-127 on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, diver
John Tellgren (Anoka, MN/Anoka) broke the 1-meter championship record at the Dick Comanzo Memorial Invitational hosted by Ithaca on Sunday.
Tellgren placed second in both events, giving him a great chance to compete at the 2013 NCAA Championships. He smashed the 1-meter record that was held by
Evan Wendt (Norwich, NY/Norwich High School) by nearly 25 points, finishing with a score of 513.40. He just missed the school record in the 3-meter with a score of 547.80.
On Saturday, the diving team grabbed four of the top five spots in the 1-meter portion of the competition. Tellgren secured the top spot with a final score of 344.32, 59 points higher than second place finisher
Matt DePalo (Franklin, MA/Xaverian Brothers). Tellgren also won the 3-meter diving with a score of 360.82.
On the swimming side, the Tigers secured the top three spots in the 100-yard butterfly, led by junior
Ryan Brannan (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) in a time of 54.94. Following him were freshman
Justin Morris (Marlborough, MA/Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School) and senior
Van Hopson (Norwich, NY/Norwich High School) with times of 56.8 and 1:03.07 respectively.
RIT also held the top four positions in the 200-yard individual medley. Michael Allen claimed the top spot in a time of 2.08:27 trailed by Morris who finished in 2:08.48.
Matt Berus (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) took third at 2:16.20.
The Tigers return to action on Feb. 2 when they travel to Nazareth for a 1 p.m. meet.
