Women's basketball loses 49-47 at Skidmore



SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- The RIT (3-9, 0-4 Liberty League) women's basketball team went scoreless over a 5:32 span late in the second half, losing at Skidmore College 49-47 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

Freshman #Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) led RIT with 11 points. (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove)Mallory Apperson (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove)# scored seven points, grabbed eight rebounds and had four steals for the Tigers who drop their fifth straight game.

RIT scored the final seven points of the first half, leading 29-22 at the break. Palmitesso and Apperson each had six points to lead the Tigers. #Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa)#, #Jackie Hom (Newton, MA/Newton South) and Jess Kramer (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt)# each had buckets down the stretch to give the Tigers the seven-point halftime edge.

The Tigers extended the lead to eight points early in the second half on a made free throw by Apperson at the 15:25 mark.

With 9:02 to play, Wheeler laid the ball in off a drive giving RIT a 40-34 lead. That would be the last field goal the Tigers would make until Palmitesso drained a three pointer with :18 seconds to play.

Skidmore would go on a 15-5 run down the stretch, taking their first lead of the game on a three pointer by Molly McLaughlin with 1:59 to play, giving the Thoroughbreds a 45-42 lead.

Palmitesso's three pointer was big for RIT, cutting Skidmore's lead to 49-45 with :18 seconds to play.

After a Skidmore missed free throw, Hom came down and laid the ball in to make it a 49-47 Skidmore lead, but time would run out on the Tigers as Skidmore holds on for the win.

RIT shot 32 percent from the floor on 19-of-59 shooting. The Tigers made 1-of-14 three pointers and were 8-of-10 from the foul line. Skidmore held a slight 34-33 rebounding edge, shooting 41 percent from the floor.

McLoughlin led the Thoroughbreds with 12 points.

RIT returns to action next weekend  when the Tigers travel to the North Country to face Clarkson on Friday, Jan. 18 at 6 pm.
