UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH -- The RIT (1-2-0) women's soccer team was defeated by Grove City (2-0-1) 2-1 in non-conference action in the opening round of the Carroll Classic hosted by John Carroll University on Friday evening.
Junior
Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport) scored RIT's lone goal, her first of the year, as the Tigers outshot Grove City 15-9. RIT fired nine shots on goal and dominated the bulk of the play.
Chelsea Tarolli gave Grove City a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 14th minute. Sam Weber had the assist on the play.
RIT turned up the pressure in the second half, firing 10 shots. Vakiener finally broke through for the Tigers in the 77th minute on her first goal of the season.
Vakiener wove through three defenders off a feed from
Rachael Bromson (Suffield, CT/Suffield) and tapped home a shot home to tie the game a t 1-1.
Less than three minutes later, Becky McManus put Grove City ahead for good with a goal in the 79th minute off an assist from Grace Rieman.
Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) played all 90 minutes in net for RIT, allowing two goals and making four saves. Kristi Lathrop picked up the win for Grove City allowing one goal and making nine saves.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, September 7 when the Tigers take on Olivet at 5 pm in day two of the Carroll Classic.
