ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (6-4-0, 1-2-0 Liberty League) men's soccer team was defeated by Rensselaer (6-3-1, 2-1-0 Liberty League) 1-0 in Liberty League action from Tiger Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Matt Koziol scored the game winning goal in the 75th minute off a penalty kick.
RIT held an 11-10 shot advantage. The Tigers took six corner kicks to three for the Engineers. Rob Dewald picked up the win for the Engineers, making five saves.
Sean Conway (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) takes the loss for RIT, allowing one goal and making four saves.
Neither team generated many scoring chances in the first half.
John Kaddo (Troy, NY/Averill Park) sent a ball into the RPI zone off a free kick midwau through the half that was headed away by an Engineer defender.
With three minutes to play in the first half,
Sean Coots (Binghamton, NY/Johnson City) saved a ball off the line off a Rensselaer corner kick that kept the game scoreless.
RIT had chances early in the second half,
Danny Bloshkin (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) fired a shot just over the cross-bar, and
Geno Rocco (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) had a shot with 26 minutes to play that Dewald dove to save.
Rensselaer had a great chance with 20 minutes to play when Joey Eilert sent a ball into the RIT penalty area. Matt Koziol headed the ball that just missed the cross-bar.
In the 75th minute RIT committed a foul inside their own box off a free kick by the Engineers. Koziol converted the kick giving the Engineers a 1-0 lead.
RIT generated some good chances late in the game.
Sean Coots (Binghamton, NY/Johnson City) had possession of the ball inside the Rensselaer box off of a nice build up by the Tigers. He was taken down inside the box by an Engineers defender, but no call was made.
Rensselaer was able to kill the rest of the clock and hold on to the 1-0 win.
RIT returns to action next Saturday, October 6 when they face Clarkson at 2 pm in Potsdam, New York.
