Volleyball opens Liberty League play with three-set losses to Clarkson and Vassar

ROCHESTER, NY -
The RIT volleyball team (9-6, 0-2 Liberty League) dropped its first two Liberty League contests of the season, falling to Clarkson (11-3, 1-0 Liberty League) and Vassar (7-2, 2-0 Liberty League) both in three sets in conference crossover play at Clark Gym on Friday. Clarkson swept RIT by scores of 25-18, 25-17, 25-21, while Vassar defeated the Tigers by scores of 25-23, 25-19, 25-13.

Against Clarkson, the first set was a back and forth affair until the Knights rattled off nine of the final 11 points to pull away. In set two, Clarkson jumped out to a commanding 13-3 lead and never looked back. In set three, Clarkson scored six straight points late to rally from a 17-16 deficit and hang on.

Alisvina Arasu hit .667 with 12 kills to lead the Knights. Lani Durlo recorded 32 assists and seven digs, while Danielle Farabee hit .778 with seven kills and three blocks. Erika Chin compiled 12 digs.

Senior Katie Cooper (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) led the Tigers offensively by hitting .400 with a team-high nine kills and six digs. Sara Martin (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) slammed seven kills, while Christina Worth (Valencia, CA/Valencia) dished out 23 assists, six digs, three blocks, and three kills. Bethany Davis (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) recorded a match-high 15 digs.

In the loss to Vassar, Cat Sullivan (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman) hit .538 with nine kills, while Cooper compiled 12 digs to go along with nine kills. Worth dished out 27 assists, while Davis also had 12 digs. Hanna Stokes (Frederick, MD/Urbana) had a team-best two service aces.

Chloe McGuire led the Brewers with 13 kills, while Clara Cardillo hit .571 with eight kills and four blocks. Taylor Mosley added eight digs, seven kills, and two service aces. Setter Hillary Koenigs dished out 34 assists to go along with four blocks and two aces. Chloe Hallum added nine digs in the win.

RIT hit .270 in the first set, but hit just -.138 in the final set. Vassar turned it on the second set, hitting a tremendous .419 as a team. The Brewers used a 7-0 run midway through the second set to break open a close match, then opened the final set by scoring 11 of the first 14 points en route to the win.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, as they host Liberty League foes St. Lawrence at 11 a.m. and Bard at 1:30 p.m. in crossover action.
