Volleyball sweeps Medaille and Nazareth to finish 4-0 at RIT Invitational; Cat Sullivan named Tournament MVP

ROCHESTER, NY -
The RIT volleyball squad (9-3) extended its winning streak to six matches after winning both of its matches at the RIT Invitational on Saturday at Clark Gym to finish 4-0 for the weekend. RIT opened the day by defeating Medaille in four sets, then swept cross-town rival Nazareth in three sets. Senior middle hitter Cat Sullivan (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman) was named the Tournament MVP, while senior Christina Worth (Valencia, CA/Valencia) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Sullivan enjoyed a tremendous weekend, leading RIT with 35 kills (2.23 per set), while hitting .516 with 13 blocks and eight service aces. Worth dished out 130 assists (8.67 per set), while hitting .444 to go along with 25 digs and 10 assisted blocks.

In the opening match against Medaille, RIT won the first set 25-20, then lost the second set 25-18. RIT rebounded to win set three 25-20, then pulled away in the final set, 25-14.

RIT opened the match by hitting .379 in the first set, then struggled immensely in the second set, allowing eight service aces by Medaille to go along with four service errors of their own. In the third set, Medaille led 17-15 before going on a 5-1 run to take a 20-18 lead. RIT would end the match on a 10-3 run. In the final set, RIT led 5-4 early on before putting the match away with an 18-5 run.

Senior setter Christina Worth (Valencia, CA/Valencia) dished out 32 assists, while adding nine digs, five blocks, and four kills for the Tigers. Sara Martin (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) added nine kills, while Cat Sullivan (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman) had eight kills and five blocks. Katie Cooper (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) hit .583 with eight kills, but did have five service errors in just two sets. Amanda White (Watertown, NY/Watertown) hit .455 and added six kills and five blocks.

Bethany Davis (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) led the way defensively with 13 digs, while Arielle Pariente (Twinsburg, OH/Twinsburg) and Briana Neuberger had nine and eight, respectively.

Simmone Telford led Medaille with 27 assists and eight service aces, while Meghan Fahy added 12 kills and eight digs.

Against Nazareth, RIT trailed 5-1 in each of the first two sets before rallying. In the second set, RIT was down 21-16 before scoring nine of the next 10 points to pick up the victory. Down 21-19 in that set, Jokajtys and White combined on a block, then Jokajtys slammed three straight kills to give RIT the lead. Cooper ended the set with a slam off a pass from Worth.

Jokajtys led RIT with 10 kills, while Sullivan hit .556 with five kills, six blocks, and three service aces. Martin added eight kills, while Cooper had seven digs, four blocks, and four service aces. Worth dished out 29 assisted and had four blocks, while Bethany Davis (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) had 14 digs.

Mario Allocco hit .500 with nine kills. Brittany Crocetti dished out 19 assists, while Jennifer Goodman had seven digs and three service aces

Yesterday, RIT defeated Bluffton and NYU, both in four sets

The Tigers return to action on Tuesday evening by with a match against fellow Genesee River rival University of Rochester at the Louis Alexander Palestra. The match gets underway at 7 p.m.
