Volleyball opens RIT Invitational with four-set wins over Bluffton and NYU

ROCHESTER, NY -
The RIT volleyball team (7-3) extended its winning streak to four matches, defeating Bluffton and NYU in four sets apiece on Friday evening at the RIT Invitational, hosted by the Tigers in Clark Gym. RIT won the first two sets, 25-17, 25-19, lost set three 25-15, then rebounded to beat Bluffton in the fourth set, 25-19. The Tigers defeated NYU 25-19 in the first set, then lost set two, 25-18. RIT pulled away in the next two sets to win 25-15, 25-19.

The Tigers hit .339 overall in the match, including .526 in the first set and .536 in the final set. RIT broke open a close fourth set by going on a 17-8 run to take control and seal the win.

Senior Cat Sullivan (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman) led the way offensively for RIT, hitting .524 with 12 kills in just 21 attempts with three bocks. Katie Cooper (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) hit .409 with 10 kills and three assists. Freshman Sara Martin (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) has 10 kills and six digs. Amanda White (Watertown, NY/Watertown) slammed eight kills and had four assisted blocks. 

Senior setter Christina Worth (Valencia, CA/Valencia) dished out 37 assists with six digs and four kills. Bethany Davis (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) and Brianna Neuberger tallied nine and eight digs each.

Brooke Ruffer led Bluffton with 14 kills, while Mackenzie Lauber dished out 26 assists. Heather Schierer added 11 digs.

Against NYU, the Tigers trailed 8-6 before going on a 14-3 run to take a commanding 20-11 lead. NYU rallied with the next six points cut the RIT lead to 20-17, but a Worth kill gave the Tigers a four-point lead. After two NYU points, the Violets made four consecutive hitting errors and RIT was able to win the match.

Senior Suzanne Jokajtys (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) had a tremendous match for the Tigers, hitting a career-best .600 with 13 kills. Cat Sullivan (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman) hit .667 with 10 kills, while White added five kills. Worth chipped in with 32 assists and seven digs. Cooper led the way with four service aces, while Davis added 14 digs.

Alexandria Mao led the Violets with 11 kills, while Emily Moore had 18 assists and Kaylee Schanda added 14 digs.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, with matches against Medaille at 10 a.m. and Nazareth at 2 p.m. to close out action at the RIT Invitational.
