ROCHESTER, NY -- Senior Matt Broedel (Hamilton, NY/Hamilton)'s goal in the 92nd minute gave the RIT men's soccer team a 1-0 win over SUNY Canton on Saturday afternoon at the 9th Annual Doug May Memorial Soccer Classic. RIT improves to 1-1-0 on the season, while SUNY Canton falls to 0-2-0.

Broedel scored off a header on a cross from #C.J. Brunner# in the 92nd minute. Broedel out-leapt his defender and steered his header past the hands of Canton goalkeeper Antonio James for the game-winner.

It was Broedel's first goal of the season, giving the Tigers a 1-1-0 record for the tournament. Nazareth defeated Brockport 4-2 in Saturday's first game.

RIT dominated shots 28-5, including 10 on goal. Sean Conway (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) picked up his first win of the season allowing no goals.

William Benahene got the start and made six saves for Canton. James came in to start the second half and allowed one goal, made four saves and picked up the loss.

The Tigers had a great chance early in the first half when senior Jon Rosebrook (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) sent a service into the Canton box. Freshman forward Reuben Marquez made the run, but Benahene came off his line intercepting the pass.

With a little under 23 minutes to play in the first half, John Kaddo (Troy, NY/Averill Park) fired a shot that Benahene had to dive to stop. The rebound came to Brunner, but he fired a shot wide of the net.

In the 34th minute Brunner broke in 1-on-1 with Benahene and fired a low hard shot that the goalkeeper dove and stopped, keeping the game scoreless.

RIT kept the pressure on Canton in the second half firing 14 shots. The Tigers best scoring chance came with 8:30 minutes to play in regulation. Danny Bloshkin (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) dribbled into the Canton zone, feeding Kaddo with a pass. Kaddo rifled a shot that bent just wide of the net.

The Tigers kept the pressure in overtime, culminating in the Broedel goal.

RIT returns to action Wednesday, September 5 when they face SUNY Morrisville at 4 p.m. in Morrisville, New York.
