PITTSFORD, NY – Junior
Rachael Bromson (Suffield, CT/Suffield) and sophomore
Sierra Kiss (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) scored goals 56 seconds apart late in the second half to lift the RIT women's soccer team (1-0) to a 2-0 win over SUNY Oneonta (0-1) in the 2012 season opener at the Nazareth College Women's Soccer Tournament at Golden Flyer Stadium on a sunny, hot, Friday afternoon.
Bromson, RIT's leading scorer in 2011, got her team on the board with just 3:01 left taking a feed from Kiss just outside the box, whirling around and firing a hard shot that bounced off the crossbar and into the goal.
Just 56 seconds later, Bromson came streaking in and fired a low shot that Oneonta goalkeeper Rori Stark dove to stop, but the rebound came just out of her reach and Kiss was there to tap the ball into the open net, giving RIT a 2-0 advantage.
Before the two quick goals, the two sides seemed destined to go into overtime, as just total of five shots were attempted in the first 40 minutes of the half.
Oneonta out-shot RIT 10-8, although RIT held a 5-3 advantage in the second half. Oneonta did attempt nine corner kicks to zero by the Tigers.
RIT goalkeeper
Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) was stout in the net, stopping six shots to earn the shutout for her first win as a Tiger. Stark made three saves in goal for the Red Dragons.
Both teams had a few great chances in the opening half. Bromson had RIT's best chance, taking a feed from Kiss to get a breakaway, but bobbled her last dribble and took a shot that Stark smothered.
Kiss had two good chances, as early on, a loose ball bounced to her in the box, but she was unable to get a clean shot off. Moments later, she fired a rocket from about 25-yards out that Stark jumped to catch, keeping the game scoreless.
Murray had to come up big a few times in the half. She made a nice save on a hard shot by Kayla Brantmeyer in the opening minutes. Late in the half,
Alexa Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) saved a sure goal, heading a ball off the line after Murray fell on the Oneonta corner kick attempt.
Oneonta fired eight shots to RIT's three in the opening 45 minutes.
Emily Shoemaker (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena),
Alex Kambourelis (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa),
Ehlana Gray (Sewickley, PA/Avonworth),
Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland), and Quincy Ornellas all made their collegiate debuts in today's game.
RIT is now 5-0 all-time against the Red Dragons. Last season, RIT defeated Oneonta 1-0 in overtime on a goal by 2012 graduate Kasey Dobrodzej.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, as they face Carnegie Mellon to complete the Nazareth College Women's Soccer Tournament.
