Vakiener sets single season goal record; Tigers lose at Geneseo

GENESEO, NY -- The RIT (7-6) women's lacrosse team travelled to Geneseo on Friday, losing to the Knights, 17-14. Junior midfielder #Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport)#'s sets single-season goals record (61) with four on Thursday. She surpasses Pinckney Templeton (Gulf Stream, FL/St. Andrew's)'s record of 58 set back in 2006. 

Vakiener , the all-time leader in points (229) , becomes the first player in program history to reach the 60-goal plateau. 

RIT was outshot 34-25, and grabbed 16 ground balls to 24 for the Knights. THe Tigers went 4-for-4 on free position attempts, went 18-of-33 on draw controls, and were 17-of-21 on clearing attempts.

Vakiener and #Loren Azlein (Cleveland, OH/Gilmour Academy)# each score four to lead the Tigers. Azlein taliies five points on the day, adding an assist.

Senior #Rebecca Lampson (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy)# tallied four points on three goals and an assist, while Marlee Vlassis had a goal and three assists. (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa)Ashleigh Caruso (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool)n# scored twice, and senior #Tina Podrasky (Scranton, PA/Wyoming Seminary)# had a pair of assists.

#Katelyn Crane (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon)# took the loss, making 13 saves on the afternoon.

Geneseo jumped ahead early in the first half, scoring five of the first eight goals. The Tigers kept it close the rest of the half, trailing 10-7 at the break.

Trailing 16-10 with 14:04 to play in the second half, the Tigers rattled off four straight goals to pull within two on Vakiener's fourth goal of the game. That cut the Knights lead to 16-14 wiht 2:01 to play. Azlein had two of RIT's four goals in the run.

Geneseo put the game away on a goal by Emily Haggerty wiht :43 seconds left in regulation. SHe finished with five points on two goals and three assists. Rachel Petrone scored five to lead the Knights.

RIT wil host Roberts Wesleyan College in non-conference action on Saturday, April 21 at 4 pm on RIT Field.
