Podrasky's goal lifts women's lacrosse to 15-14 win at Nazareth and caps Vakiener's historic day

PITTSFORD, NY -- Junior #Tina Podrasky (Scranton, PA/Wyoming Seminary)# scored the game-winning goal with 33 seconds left in regulation as the RIT (5-4) women's lacrosse team held off Nazareth College (4-6) 15-14 in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon.

Podrasky scored the game-winnier off an assist from #Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport)# in the closing seconds to give the Tigers their third straight win. Vakiener, who led RIT with nine points on six goals and three assists, became the first Tiger to record 200 points and broke the RIT career record for goals in a career. She accomplished both milestones on her second goal of the game, with 12:19 in the first half, giving RIT a 6-4 lead. Vakiener now has 145 career goals and 205 points.

Nazareth had a chance to tie the score in the closing seconds, but a free-position attempt by sophomore Amy McIntosh sailed over the goal.

#Rebecca Lampson (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy)# tallied five goals for RIT, while Marlee Vlassis (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) added a pair of goals. #Loren Azlein (Cleveland, OH/Gilmour Academy)# had a goal and two assists, while #Carly Augustyn (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili)# dished out three assists.

RIT held a 9-4 advantage following a goal by Vlassis at the 5:18 mark of the first half. Vakiener scored four of her six goals and assisted on two others during the Tigers' early scoring run.

Nazareth, however, scored five of the next six goals before the first half ended to close within 10-9 at the break. Alyssa Johnston scored twice, then Megan Cregan scored off a pass from Leah Cronister. Amy McIntosh followed with an unassisted goal to bring Nazareth to within 9-8.

A goal by Lampson interrupted the string for RIT, before Cronister closed out the first-half scoring with an unassisted goal with :12 left.

The game was close the rest of the way, RIT scored the first two goals of the second half, taking a 12-9 lead on Vakiener's fifth goal of the contest.

But, Nazareth fought back, taking the lead again with 7:19 to play on Cregan's fifth goal of the game, on a free-position shot.

A goal by Azlein tied the score again, but Nazareth regained the lead on a free-position goal by junior Kayleigh Pearson with 4:59 to go.

Vakiener's sixth goal of the game and 43rd of the season tied the score again at 14-14 to set the stage for Podrasky's game-winner, which was her first goal of the game and seventh of the season.

Nazareth had advantages in shots (41-26) and ground balls (19-14). RIT won 17 draw controls to 14 for Nazareth. Vakiener had two ground balls and a caused turnover for RIT. #Cori VanKerkhove (East Irondequoit, NY/Eastridge)#, #Kristen Wozniak (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs)#, Lampson, Azlein and #Lucia Martino (Lancaster, NY/Buffalo Seminary)# each had two ground balls.

#Katelyn Crane (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon)# got the start in net, picking up the win making 13 saves.

RIT returns to action on Friday, April 13 when the Tigers take on Clarkson University at 4 p.m. in Potsdam, New York.
