Women's lacrosse loses one-goal game to Rensselaer

ROCHESTER, NY -- RIT's (2-4, 1-1 Liberty League) #Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport)# had two shots in the closing seconds to tie the score, but Rensselaer (7-0, 2-0 Liberty League) goalie Allie Arnal made the saves to give the Engineers a 13-12 win over the host Tigers in Liberty League action from RIT's Turf Field on Saturday.

Rensselaer's Marissa Page scored off an assist from Madeline Sisson with 8:50 to play to break a 12-12 tie. That goal proved to be the game-winner as the Engineers held off a late charge by the Tigers.

 RIT held a 31-25 shot advantage and had 28 ground balls to 24 for the Engineers. The Tigers were 16-of-19 on clearing attempts and were 1-for-4 on free position attempts.

Vakiener led RIT with six points on five goals and an assist. Freshman Marlee Vlassis (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) added three goals, while #Rebecca Lampson (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy) added two goals and an assist. (Landisville, PA/Hempfield)Carly Augustyn (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili) and Tina Podrasky (Scranton, PA/Wyoming Seminary)# each had a goal and an assist for the Tigers.

Madeline Sisson led Rensselaer with six points on four goals and two assists. Meg Colitz and Shannon Maguire each had two goals and an assist, while Rachel Scofield had a pair of goals.

Trailing two at the half, RIT fell behind 10-7 early in the second half, when Vlassis converted the rare man-down free position attempt pulling RIT to within two at 10-8.

Lampson scored off an assist from Augustyn with 24:19 to play to make it a 10-9 Rensselaer advantage.

After a Michelle Denny goals made it 11-9 Engineers, the Tigers rattled off three straight goals, taking a 12-11 lead on Vakiener's fifth goal of the day. She scored two of the three goals, Vlassis added the other.

Sisson tied the score at 11-11 with 14:37 to play on a free position attemtp.

Page scored the game-winner with 8:50 to play off an assist from Sisson.

RIT had a chance in the closing seconds to send the game into overtime. #Ashleigh Caruso (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool)# and Vakiener each had very good chances, but Arnal came up with the saves.

Arnal picked up the win, allowing 12 goals and making 14 saves. #Katelyn Crane (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon)# took the loss for RIT, making eight saves.

RIT returns to action on Friday, April 6 when they face Vassar in Liberty League action at 4 pm in Poughkeepsie, New York.
