ROCHESTER, NY - Junior midfielder #
Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport)# tied RIT's single-game record with 11 points, while breaking the university's record for points in a career, as the women's lacrosse (2-3, 1-0 Liberty League) team rolled to a 20-14 win over Skidmore (4-2, 0-1 Liberty League) in its first ever Liberty League contest on Friday afternoon at RIT's Turf Field.
Vakiener now has 178 career points (125-53-178) in just 38 career games. Her second goal of the game 6:37 into the contest gave RIT a 4-1 lead and shattered the career mark of 168 points, held by
Eileen Hennigan (Liverpool, NY/Christian Brothers Academy), who played at RIT from 2007-2010.
That goal was the first of three straight for Vakiener, part of eight unanswered goals that gave the Tigers an 8-1 lead with 13:57 left in the first half. Skidmore would rally to make it a 12-8 game at halftime.
Vakiener scored seven goals and added four assists, tying her own mark set April 10, 2011 against Alfred, and also equalling the mark set by Sarah Maneri on April 5, 2001 vs. Wells. The junior midfielder now has 36 points on 23 goals and 13 assists in just five games this season.
Skidmore out-shot RIT, 35-29 and won the battle of the ground balls, 23-20, and draw controls, 22-14.
#
Rebecca Lampson (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy)# added five goals for the Tigers, while #
Carly Augustyn (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili)# added two goals and two assists, and
Marlee Vlassis (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) tallied a goal and three assists. #
Tina Podrasky (Scranton, PA/Wyoming Seminary)# scored twice and dished out an assist, while #
Ashleigh Caruso (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool)# added a pair of goals, and #
Loren Azlein (Cleveland, OH/Gilmour Academy)# scored once.
RIT goalkeeper #
Katelyn Crane (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon)# was strong in net, stopping 14 shots and keying a strong transition attack. The Tigers were 21-for-24 on clears.
Summer Segalas led the Thoroughbreds with five goals, while Lauren Madden, and Leslie Stebbins tallied three goals apiece. Abbie Hamlin won five draw controls, while Ali Evans led the way with seven ground balls.
The duo of Rachel Klein and Shelby Witheford combined to make just three saves in goal for Skidmore.
Lampson and Vakiener scored the first two goals of the second half to give RIT a 14-8 lead before Madden and Segalas tallied to get Skidmore back to within four. The Thoroughbreds thought they had scored on a free position attempt, but it was ruled that the player was in the crease, nullifying the goal. From there, RIT scored the next two and six of the next eight to grab its largest lead of the game at 20-12 with 6:13 left.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, as they host Rensselaer in a Liberty League showdown at the RIT Turf Field, beginning at 2 p.m.
