Women's soccer ties Ohio Northern 1-1 of NCAA First Round game; Polar Bears advance on PK's

PITTSBURGH, PA -- The RIT (11-5-3) women's soccer team tied Ohio Northern University 1-1 in their first-ever NCAA Women's Soccer Division III Tournament game from the campus of Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday. The Polar Bears advanced to the second round with a 4-2 advantage on penalty kicks.

RIT held a 9-7 shot advantage. The TIgers took 11 corner kicks to three for the Polar Bears who advance to play Carnegie Mellon in the second round on Sunday afternoon.

"I am extrememly proud of this team, said Head Coach Liz Masterson. "We kept fighting all year long. I thought we were the aggresors today, but just couldn't quite finish."

RIT keeper (Penfield, NY/Fairport)Amanda Murray# made three saves for the Tigers, while Erin Waehner made three stops for Ohio Northern.

Abbie Schauble scored the lone goal of the opening half for Ohio Northern with 7:03 to play in the half off an assist from Sami Atkinson.

Atkinson sent a diagonal ball into the RIT area that Schauble ran onto and fired a shot. Murray got a piece of the shot, however, the ball deflected into the net giving the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers generated a couple solid scoring chances in the first half, the first coming less than four minutes into the half when Emily Shoemaker (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) sent a long throw into the Ohio Northern penalty area, that Ehlana Gray (Sewickley, PA/Avonworth) ran onto. Her shot was saved by Waehner, keeping the game scoreless.

With time running out in the half, Jackie Jacobson (Westlake, CA/Westlake) fired a shot from the top of the Ohio Northern box that sailed just over the cross bar as time ran out in the half.

Quincey Ornellas (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark) tied the score at 1-1 in the 59th minute off an assist from Alexa Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel). Martinez sent a diagonal ball to Ornellas who turned and fired a shot that beat Waehner low and to the left. It was Ornellas' fifth goal of the season.

RIT had a chance with a little over five minutes remaining in regulation when Shoemaker sent a long throw in the Polar Bears zone. Alexa Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) elevated and got a head on the ball. Waehner had to make the save tipping the shot over cross-bar.

On the ensuing corner kick, the Tigers fired a shot that just missed the post and out of play.

Ohio Northern generated some good chances towards the end of regulation, but RIT's defense was able to control the ball and clear it away from trouble.

RIT had a grat chance in the second overtime. Emily Shoemaker (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) launched a throw into the Ohio Northern penalty area. Alexa Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) ran onto the throw, elevated and got a head on the ball, forcing Waehner to tip the ball out of play.

On the ensuing corner kick, Jaimie Lewandwoski sent a ball in that Martinez got to, firing a hard shot that went just wide of the Ohio Northern net.

In the shootout, Lewandwoski and Martinez went first for the Tigers, each converting. Ohio Northern's Kimmy Connor stopped two straight for the Polar Bears. Alex Hazelet converted the game-winning kick to send the Bears to the second round.
