FREDONIA, NY – The RIT volleyball team (17-9) earned a split on the second day of the Fredonia Invitational and finished the tournament with a 2-2 record. The Tigers beat D'Youville in today's opener, before falling to Nazareth in a grueling, five set match. With the victory over D'Youville, the Tigers matched their win total from the 2011 season.
The Tigers defeated D'Youville in three sets, by scores of 25-11, 25-10 and 25-20. RIT hit .274 for the match, including .343 in the second set.
Katie Cooper (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) led the Tigers with nine kills and added nine digs while teammate
Arielle Pariente (Twinsburg, OH/Twinsburg) set a career-high with eight kills.
Christina Worth (Valencia, CA/Valencia) dished out a team-high 17 assists and recorded four digs and three blocks in the match.
Suzanne Jokajtys (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) and
Cat Sullivan (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman) finished with six and five kills respectively.
Bethany Davis (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) paced the defense with 17 digs.
Nazareth won the first set 23-25 but the Tigers came back to win set two 25-23. The Golden Flyers took set three by a score of 22-25. Facing defeat, RIT rallied to win set four 25-20 and force a decisive fifth set. Nazareth took control in the final set and won 15-7. For the match, Jokajtys finished with 13 kills and eight digs and Cooper slammed 11 kills and added 12 digs. Davis recorded 21 digs and
Sara Martin (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) had nine kills and six digs. Sullivan chipped in with seven kills and six blocks.
Sullivan was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Yesterday, RIT lost to Westmister, 3-0, and beat the host Blue Devils, 3-1.
RIT returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. when they host Brockport. The contest will be the last home game of the year and will honor the team's five seniors. The two teams last played each other on Oct. 11, 2011 with the Tigers defeating Brockport in four sets.
