ROCHESTER, NY – The No. 1 RIT women's hockey team (21-1-2, 14-1-2 ECAC West) suffered its first loss of the 2010-11 season, falling to SUNY Oswego (12-9-3, 8-7-3 ECAC West) 2-1 at Ritter Arena on Saturday evening. The Tigers had their 23-game unbeaten streak snapped. Oswego goaltender Emi Williams was the difference, stopping 46 saves to earn the game's first star.
The Lakers led 1-0 until Oliva Boersen attempted a centering pass from behind the net that glanced off a Tiger defenseman's skate and through the legs of RIT goaltender #
Laura Chamberlain (Norco, CA/LA Selects)#, giving the Lakers a 2-0 lead with 16:15 left in regulation.
#
Katie Stack (Batavia, NY/Rochester Edge)# got the Tigers to within 2-1 with her 77th career goal, on the power-play, 1:57 later. #
Ariane Yokoyama (Van Nuys, CA/LA Selects) fed
Traci Galbraith (Oakville, Ontario/Burlington Jr. Barracudas)# at the point. Galbraith fired a shot that Williams stopped, but the rebound came right to Stack who had the wide open net.
The Tigers out-shot Oswego, 20-3 in the third period, shooting from all angles, and turning up the intensity, but could not solve Williams. RIT's best chance came midway through the period, when #
Kourtney Kunichika (Fullerton, CA/LA Selects)# slipped through a pair of Oswego defenders, and was alone on Williams, but was denied.
RIT pounded the Lakers net over the final 10 minutes, but could not get anything past Williams.
RIT out-shot Oswego, 47-10 overall. The Lakers also blocked 30 RIT shots in addition.
Mackenzie Lee and Boersen scored for the Lakers.
The Tigers were 1-for-8 with the man-advantage, while holding Oswego scoreless in six attempts on the power-play.
RIT out-shot Oswego 14-4 over the opening 20 minutes, but trailed 1-0.
Lee gave the Lakers the lead with 2:13 left in the period, as she took a feed from Olivia Boerson on a 2-on-1 and slid a shot between the legs of Chamberlain for her 13th goal of the season.
RIT held Oswego without a shot over the first 14 minutes of the contest. Dagg had a breakaway for the Tigers just 15 seconds in, but could not get a shot off. The Tigers had several other good chances, but Williams was up to the task, keeping RIT off the board over the opening 20 minutes.
RIT came out and played a dominating second period, but once again could not solve Williams and the pesky Oswego defense.
Dagg had RIT's best chance of the period, as a shot from #
Kristina Moss (Webster, NY/Buffalo Bisons)# deflected to her, and with Williams out of position, the puck slid right through the crease.
Williams was injured on the play, but was able to stay in the game.
RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 17-7-0, and have won seven of eight meetings between the two schools, since Oswego re-established its program in 2007.
Yesterday, the Tigers defeated Oswego, 3-1. Tonight, RIT honored seniors Dagg, Stack, Galbraith, and #
Traci Galbraith (Oakville, Ontario/Burlington Jr. Barracudas)#.
