Women's basketball closes 2011 with win at D'Youville

BUFFALO, NY -- The RIT (4-5) women's basketball team ended 2011 with a 77-56 win at D'Youville College on Saturday afternoon. Senior #Anne Wapshare (Blasdell, NY/Immaculata Academy)# led the Tigers with 17 points. The Tigers led by 20 points at the half and cruised home in the second half to pick up their fourth win of the season.

Wapshare was one of three Tigers to score in double figures. #Leslie Havens (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton)# scored 15 points, grabbed four rebounds, dished out eight assists and had four steals. #Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa)# added 10 points and had eight rebounds.

#Courtney Tennant (Cortland, NY/Cortland) and Alex Kelley (Rochester, NY/Brighton)# each scored eight points off the bench. 

RIT shot 43.5 percent from the floor on 27-of-62 shooting. The Tigers went 6-of-17 from behind the arc and were 17-of-26 from the foul line.

D'Youville held a slight 41-38 rebounding edge. RIT scored 30 of their 77 points in the paint, and score 19 points off of 22 Spartans turnovers.

RIT opened the game on a 10-0 run and never looke back. Wapshare scored six of the Tigers first 10 points, all on three pointers. 

Wapshare's three pointer with 15:23 remaining increased RIT's lead to 15 points at 21-6, while a three pointer by Havens with 14:27 to play gave the Tigers a 24-6 lead.

The Tigers made five three pointers in the first half and shot 47.4 percent from the floor. Havens led the Tigers with 13 first-half points, while Wapshare added 12 points. 

Saturday's win was a good warm up for the start of the Liberty League portion of the Tigers schedule which gets under way on Friday, Jan. 6 when the Tigers host Rensselaer at 6 pm at Clark Gym.
