Women's basketball erases first half deficit to beat Fisher in OT

PITTSFORD, NY -- For the second time this season, the RIT (3-4) women's basketball team defeated St. John Fisher College (3-5). This time, the Tigers came from 15 points down to beat the Cardinals, 67-60 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Manning-Napier Gym.  Sophomore forward #Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa)# set a school record by going 13-for-13 from the free throw line, en route to a career-high 27 points.

The Tigers trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, and by as many as 11 early in the second half, before a furious second-half rally got the Tigers back in the game.  St. John Fisher led 17-2 with 7:31 left in the first half, but RIT outscored the Cardinals 65-43 over the next 37:29, including 54-36 in the second half and overtime.

Wheeler gave the Tigers their first lead of the game at 49-48 with :59 second left in regulation.  Jessica Krzemien drained a 3-pointer on the Cardinals next possession to put Fisher back on top 51-49 with 46 seconds to play.

Wheeler answered right back with a layup with 26 seconds left in the half, pushing the game to extra time.

WIth St. John Fisher leading 58-56 at the 3:16 mark of overtime, RIT closed out the game and the Cardinals with an 11-2 run to improve their record to 3-4 on the season. 

Wheeler shot 7-of-16 shooting from the floor and made all 13 of her foul shots. The 13-for-13 from the line set a school record for most consecutive free throws in a game. She also grabbed eight rebounds, blocked two shots, and had a steal. She scored 22 of her 27 points in the second half and overtime, including the Tigers last three buckets at the end of regulation to send the game into the extra session.

#Jess Kramer (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt)# added 11 points, three assists and eight rebounds for the Tigers, while #Leslie Havens (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton)# scored 12 points, and had four rebounds, three assists and seven steals.

RIT shot a blistering 24-for-27 (88.9%) from the free throw line. The Tigers scored 17 points off of 27 St. John Fisher turnovers, and scored 24 of their 67 points in the paint.

The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 13 when they host No. 5 University of Rochester at 7 p.m. at Clark Gym.
