ROCHESTER, NY - Former women's hockey great, #
Sarah Dagg (St. George, Ontario/Hamilton Hawks)#, the winner of the 2011 Laura Hurd Award as Division I National Player of the Year, will be honored before the No. 2 Tigers take on ECAC West rival Utica on Saturday afternoon. It is the home opener for the Tigers, who are 2-0-0 this season and advanced to the 2011 NCAA Division III Championship game.
The St. George, Ontario native, who currently plays for the Burlington Barracudas of the Canadian Women's Hockey League, will drop the ceremonial first puck and be honored before and throughout the contest. Dagg was the 16th overall pick of the 2011 CWHL draft. Former RIT teammate
Katie Stack (Batavia, NY/Rochester Edge) was taken 23rd by Toronto.
Dagg, who became RIT's first national player of the year, was also honored as the 2010 PAYCHEX Co-Female College Athlete of the Year. She became RIT's second three-time AHCA/RBK All-American and was named the 2011 ECAC West Player of the Year after leading the Tigers to a program-record 26 wins and their first conference regular season and post-season championships. Dagg finished the season with 18 goals and 24 assists in 30 games.
The 5-foot-2 forward finished her stellar career as the school's all-time leading scorer. She finished with 63 goals and 91 assists in 109 career games. She is RIT's all-time leader in assists and recorded three straight straight 40-point seasons. Dagg is second all-time at RIT with 20 power-play tallies, and tied for first nine shorthanded goals.
In Dagg's four seasons at RIT, the Tigers finished 85-17-7 and were consistently ranked in the top-five nationally. Last season, the Tigers were the No. 1 team in Division III for 11 weeks.
The Tigers enter the Saturday and Sunday's games fresh off of wins over No. 8 Manhattanville and No. 1 Norwich at the ECAC East/West Showcase hosted by Norwich last weekend. #
Tenecia Hiller (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Thunder)# was named the Tournament MVP after scoring three goals. RIT is 12-2-0 all-time against the Pioneers and have won eight straight in the series dating back to Feb. 2, 2008. Last year, RIT went 3-0 against the Pioneers, outscoring them 11-3.
Both Saturday and Sunday's games against Utica will get underway at 3:05 p.m. and will be broadcast by Time Warner Cable Sports.
