GENEVA, NY -- In a Liberty League battle for second place, the RIT (10-6-2, 5-2-1 LL) men's soccer team was defeated 2-1 in overtime by Hobart (16-2-0, 6-2-0 LL) on a chilly afternoon in Geneva, N.Y. The Statesmen won on a penalty kick in the 93rd minute to secure second place in the Liberty League standings.
Michael Moulton converted a penalty kick in extra time to give the Statesmen the win and second place in the Liberty League standings.
The win secures a home game for Hobart in next week's Liberty League tournament. RIT will travel back to Geneva to face the Statesmen on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The winner will face the winner between St. Lawrence and Vassar in championship game on Oct. 5.
Hobart got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 6th minute ona goal by Tommy Hayes. He flicked home a header off a cross from Sanchez to give the Statesmen an early lead.
RIT equalized in the 44th minute on
Sean Sullivan (Malvern, PA/Great Valley)'s second goal of the season. Off a free kick,
Ryan Giust (Chesterland, OH/Hawken School) fired a beautiful ball from about midfield that Sullivan ran onto and one-timed into the corner of the Hobart goal.
Hobart had the lions share of the possession in the second half, but RIT's defense stayed stout, holding the Statesmen at bay.
With about 23 minues to play in regulation Hobart had a good chance off a corner kick. The ball was loose inside the RIT six-yard box. In the scrum Hobart fired a shot that was blocked off the line by a Tigers defender keeping the game deadlocked at 1-1.
In overtime, Giust fouled Hobart's Caetano Sanchez inside the box giving the Statesmen a penalty kick. Michael Moulton took the penalty firing a shot into the left corner to give Hobart the win.
RIT was outshot by Hobart 18-4. The Tigers took just one corner kick to 10 for the Statesmen.
Sean Conway (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) took the loss for RIT making three saves. Charlie Hale picked up the win making two saves.
