ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT women's soccer team was defeated by No. 24 Skidmore College 1-0 in Liberty League action on a cold and rainy day at RIT Field. The loss drops the Tigers to 4-6-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the Liberty League. The Thoroughbreds improve to 7-3-0 overall and even their Liberty League record to 2-2-0.
Elena Stansky scored the game winner for Skidmore in the 72nd minute. Kelsey Yam took a shot that was blocked by a RIT defender. The rebound came right to Stansky and she fired a shot into the top right corner, breaking a scoreless tie.
The Tigers had two very good chances late in the second half to equalize. With 13 minutes to play freshman forward
Sierra Kiss (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) gathered a loose ball off a corner kick and fired a shot that was headed for the corner, but Skidmore goalkeeper Meghan Sleezer made the diving stop.
A minute later, the Tigers appeared to have tied the game on a shot from
Rachael Bromson (Suffield, CT/Suffield). Her shot was deflected before it could cross the goal line by a Skidmore defender. The play started on a shot by Kiss that was saved by Sleezer. The ball went underneath Sleezer and came right to Bromson who turned and fired a slow dribbler that was saved off the line by the defender.
RIT had three very good scoring chances late in the first half. Bromson had two chances, but Sleezer came up with the big saves. Freshman
Katie Schindler (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) had a great chance from 25 yards out, but again, Sleezer came up with the diving stop on a ball headed into the corner.
Sleezer picked up the win for Skidmore, her sixth of the season, allowing no goals and making 10 saves.
Ashley Valenti (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) took the loss for RIT making one save.
RIT held a slight edge on shots, 14-13. The Tigers took three corner kicks to none for the Thoroughbreds.
Kiss and Bromson each had two shots on net to lead the way for RIT who had 10 shots on goal in all.
RIT returns to action on Wednesday, October 5 when the Tigers host No. 2 William Smith College at 4 pm on RIT Field.
