ELMIRA, NY - The RIT women's basketball team (3-12, 1-5 Empire 8) let an 11-point halftime lead slip away, as host Elmira (3-11, 1-4 Empire 8) scored 59 second half points to hand the RIT women's basketball team an 82-74 loss in an Empire 8 contest at Speidel Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
RIT led by as many as 14 early on and held a 34-23 lead at halftime, holding Elmira to just 26 percent shooting over the opening 20 minutes. In the second half however, Elmira came out on fire and hit 19-of-29 shots from the field (66 percent), including 9-for-11 from 3-point range. Five Soaring Eagles scored in double figures over just the final 20 minutes.
Elmira went on a 14-0 run to start the half, then added a 32-15 spurt to take a 14-point lead with 3:28 left. RIT quickly went on an 8-1 run to cut the lead to seven, but could get no closer.
RIT opened the game on a 19-5 run.

Leslie Havens (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton)# led RIT with 17 points, five boards, five assists, and three steals. She was 9-for-10 from the foul line. #
Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) and
Courtney Tennant (Cortland, NY/Cortland)# added 14 points apiece. #
Jess Kramer (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt)# scored a career-high 12 points and grabbed six boards, and dished out five assists. #
Jackie Hom (Newton, MA/Newton South)# nearly became the fifth Tiger to score in double figures, with nine points.
Becca Fretz led five Soaring Eagles in double figures with 18 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Jessica Zoltowski added 17 points and a game-high 10 boards, while Tesia Kaczynski scored 12 of her 15 points in the second half. Maria Thannhauser added 13 points and seven boards, while Becky Peterman scored all 12 of her points in the second half.
Elmira out-rebounded RIT 43-35. The two teams combined to turn the ball over just 21 times, including just five in the second half. The Soaring Eagles shot 45 percent overall from the field, while RIT shot 40 percent. RIT made a season-high 23 free throws, shooting 79 percent.
RIT has now lost six straight, including five in a row in conference play.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, as they make the short trip to face Empire 8 rival St. John Fisher in an Empire 8 contest that gets underway at 2 p.m.
