Schaffer named MVP, as volleyball finishes second at St. Lawrence Invitational

Senior recorded 72 kills over the weekend

Senior outside hitter Jessica Schaffer (Wellington, OH/Keystone) was named St. Lawrence Tournament MVP, as the RIT volleyball team (5-3) went 1-1 on Saturday and finished second overall.  The Tigers opened the day with a three-game win over SUNY Plattsburgh, then dropped a five-game heartbreaker to St. Lawrence in the final match of the day.

The Tigers secured a 25-22, 25-17, 25-12 win over the Cardinals in the opening match on Friday.  Schaffer# led RIT woth 19 kills to go along with 15 digs, three service aces, and three blocks.  Setter Christina Worth (Valencia, CA/Valencia) chipped in with 33 assists, 17digs, and two aces, while Kristin Parish (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) added four aces and two blocks.

RIT won the first and third games against St. Lawrence, but could not hold on, losing 25-17, 20-25, 25-21, 23-25, 11-15.  Schaffer slammed 20 kills and added 14 digs, and two blocks, Rebecca Moore (San Diego, CA/Rancho Bernardo) added 15 kills and nine digs.  Worth dished out 50 assists, alond with 13 digs, and four kills.

Schaffer, who recorded 72 kills over the weekend, was also named to the Hartwick-Holiday Inn All-Tournament Team last weekend.

Last night, the Tigers defeated SUNY Oswego 28-26, 25-19, 25-18 and SUNY IT, 25-13, 25-13, 20-25, 25-14.

The Tigers are back in action on Friday and Saturday, as they host the eight-team RIT Invitational at Clark Gym.  RIT opens with SUNY Geneseo at 12 p.m. Friday.
