CORTLAND, NY -- The #14 RIT men's lacrosse team fell to third ranked and defending Division III National Champion Cortland State 15-7 in quarterfinals action of the 2010 Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship on Wednesday. The Tigers finish the 2010 season with a 14-6 record.
Cortland broke a close game open with seven fourth-quarter goals while holding the Tigers to just two tallies. The Red Dragons advance to the semifinals where they will face Tufts University.
RIT trailed 3-1 after the first quarter, but rallied with three goals in the second quarter to trail by two tat the half.
Sean Gillies (Oakville, Ontario/Albany Academy),
Adam Vlassis (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa), and
Jordan MacIntosh (Oakville, ON/Holy Trinity) scored the Tigers second-quarter goals. MacIntosh's goal with 1:19 to play cut the Red Dragons lead to 5-4.
The Red Dragons added a late goal to take a 6-4 lead into half time.
Cortland scored the first two goals out of half time to take an 8-4 lead.
Gillies scored the second of his three goals with 2:33 remaining in the third quarter to cut the lead to 8-5.
Alex Crepinsek (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) found Gillies in front of the Cortland goal and fed him a pass. Gillies caught the pass and scooped an underhanded shot past the Red Dragons goalie for his 49th of the season.
Gillies struck again early in the fourth quarter on an assist from
Jerry Ragonese (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) to make it 8-6 Cortland. Ragonese won the opening face off of the quarter and started the fast break. He dished the ball to Gillies who fired a shot for his third of the game.
Cortland answered right back with seven straight goals over a ten minute span in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
Senior
David Burke (Fairport, NY/Fairport) added a late man-up goal on an assist from Gillies to make it a 15-7 final.
SUNY Cortland out-shot the Tigers 46-29 and won the groundball battle 41-28. RIT was 13-of-18 on clearing attempts and was 1-for-2 on man-up chances.
Gillies finished with four points on three goals and an assist. He finished the season with 60 points on 50 goals and 10 assists. His 50 goals is tied for eighth all time in school history.

Dan MacRae (Oakville, Ontario/Holy Trinity) had three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Jerry Ragonese (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) was 12-of-26 on face-offs and had a team-high seven ground balls.
Robert Tonnessen (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) made 10 saves in the loss.
