ITHACA, NY -- The seventeenth ranked RIT men's lacrosse team was defeated by Empire 8 rival Ithaca College (3-7, 1-1 E8) 10-8 this afternoon. The Tigers allowed two goals over the final 5:03 to the Bombers after having come back to tie the game early in the fourth quarter. The loss drops RIT to 7-4 overall and 2-2 in the Empire 8.
RIT rallied from a four-goal deficit late in the third quarter to tie the score at 8-8 on an unassisted man-up goal by
Sean Gillies (Oakville, Ontario/Albany Academy) with 10:47 remaining in the fourth quarter. That capped off a four-goal run by the Tigers.
Kelso Davis (Freeport, ME/Deerfield Academy),
Avery Hallett (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) and #A.J. Tingle# each had goals in the run for RIT.
The Bombers took the lead for good with 5:03 to play in the fourth on a man-up goal by Jay Lucas. Devin Weinshank added an insurance goal with 4:27 to play to salt the game away.
RIT came out quick in the first quarter leading 3-1.
Adam Vlassis (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa),
Cody Schroeder-Young (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) and
Jordan Collins-Hartwig (Buffalo, NY/Clarence) each had goals in the first for the Tigers.
Ithaca responded in the second quarter with four goals and led 5-4 at the half.
David Burke (Fairport, NY/Fairport) scored on an assist from Collins-Hartwig with 57 seconds remaining in the half to cut the Bombers lead to one.
The Bombers came out strong in the third quarter scoring three straight goals to open the quarter building an 8-4 lead.
The Tigers rallied late in the third quarter and into the fourth, but the two late goals by Ithaca sealed the win for the Bombers.
Gillies, Collins-Hartwig and Schroeder-Young paced the Tigers with a goal and an assist apiece. The Tigers were held under double-digits in scoring for the first time this season.
Tingle, Davis, Vlassis, Burke and Hallett each had a goal. Senior
Jerry Ragonese (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) was 10-of-21 on face-offs and had nine ground balls.
Robert Tonnessen (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) took the loss making nine saves.
RIT returns to action on Wednesday, April 14 versus St. John Fisher. Face-off is at 4 pm in Pittsford, New York.
