TROY, NY – Rensselaer's Bryant Johnson scored with 7.7 seconds remaining giving the Red Hawks a 13-12 win over RIT (0-2) in non-league action on Saturday.
With the game tied 12-12, RPI forced a RIT turnover to gain possession of the ball with just over one minute remaining. Rensselaer maintained possession and found Johnson who ripped a shot for the game-winner.
RIT (0-2) won the ensuing faceoff and junior
MJ Kiekebelt (Caledon, Ontario/St. Andrews College/Aurora) got off a shot but was denied by James Manchester as the buzzer went off.
The Tigers jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first period on a pair of goals by junior Jordan McIntosh and single goals by
Iric Bressler (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) and
Kelso Davis (Freeport, ME/Deerfield Academy). The Engineers stormed back in the second quarter with six goals for a 7-4 halftime lead.
RIT opened the third quarter with the first two goals of the quarter to pull within one (7-6) and the Tigers eventually went ahead, 10-9, on a McIntosh goal at 10:03 of the fourth quarter.
The teams traded the next three goals before the Engineers went back ahead, 12-11, on a Conor Cocheles goal with 6:20 left.
RIT tied the game with a man-up goal by
Sean Gillies (Oakville, Ontario/Albany Academy) – this after being denied on a lengthy two-man advantage just minutes earlier – with only 1:41 left on the clock.
McIntosh led RIT with five goals, while
Sean Gillies (Oakville, Ontario/Albany Academy) added two goals. Bressler finished with two goals. Davis had a goal and two assists and
Adam Vlassis (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) had a goal and an assist.
Junior goalie
Kevin Rattigan (Chicago, IL/Western Reserve Academy) finished with 14 saves. The Tigers finished with one man-up goal in three chances. RIT was out shot 42-27, but won the ground ball battle 51-44. The Tigers won 14-of-29 face offs and went 12-of-16 on clearing attempts.
RIT returns to action on Wednesday, March 10 at Scranton. Game time is 4 pm in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
