ROCHESTER, NY -- The 16th ranked RIT (6-3) men's lacrosse team was defeated by fourth ranked SUNY Cortland (5-2) 12-11 in overtime on Wednesday afternoon. Cortland's Chris DeLuca scored the game-winner with seven seconds remaining in overtime to give the Red Dragons the win.
RIT's
Kelso Davis (Freeport, ME/Deerfield Academy) tied the score with 1:51 remaining in the fourth quarter after RIT trailed early in the second half. He scored on a one-timer inside off a nifty feed from
Iric Bressler (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) to tie the game at 11-11.
It didn't look good for RIT early in the game as the Tigers trailed 4-1 after the first quarter. RIT's lone goal in the opening quarter came from
Adam Lehmann (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) at the 11:02 mark off a feed from Davis.
The Tigers stormed back in the second quarter scoring six times including a three goal run late in the quarter.
Davis scored the first of his two goals with 4:28 to play in the half cutting Cortland's lead to 7-5. Junior long-stick midfielder #M.J. Kiekebelt# scooped up the ensuing face-off, raced in and scored making it a 7-6 lead for the Red Dragons.
Sean Gillies (Oakville, Ontario/Albany Academy) took a feed from Davis with 2:56 to play in the half, tying the score at 7-7.
DeLuca, who led Cortland with four goals, scored late in the half to give the defending Division III National Champions an 8-7 halftime lead.
After an early goal by
Chris Cherami (Olwick, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) in the third quarter, Cortland scored three straight to take an 11-8 lead. Gillies scored with 9:33 remaining in the third quarter for the Tigers making it 11-9.
In the fourth quarter, Lehmann beat his defender into the zone from midfield. Senior
David Burke (Fairport, NY/Fairport) led Lehmann with a perfect pass and he stormed in and made it 11-10 Cortland with 8:18 to play.
Davis' goal with 1:51 was the third tie of the game.
RIT had one chance in the overtime on a break. Off a Cortland turnover, the Tigers cleared the ball out to
Dan MacRae (Oakville, Ontario/Holy Trinity) who fired a shot that was saved by Cortland goalie Mike Kaminski. The Red Dragons cleared the ball right back down the field and Brian Krol found DeLuca who scored the game-winner.
Sean Gillies (Oakville, Ontario/Albany Academy) scored three goals for RIT who were out shot by a narrow 36-35 margin.
Kelso Davis (Freeport, ME/Deerfield Academy) had two goals and two assists.
Iric Bressler (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) and
Adam Lehmann (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) each had a pair of tallies.
David Burke (Fairport, NY/Fairport) dished out a pair of assists.
Junior goalie
Robert Tonnessen (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) was outstanding in net for RIT making a season-high 19 saves against the fourth-ranked Red Dragons.
Jerry Ragonese (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) won 15-of-27 face offs and had seven ground balls.
RIT is off until Wednesday April 7th when they host Empire 8 rival Elmira College at 4 pm on RIT Field.
