ITHACA, NY - The RIT volleyball team had its 2010 season ended by top-seed Ithaca in four sets at the Empire 8 semifinal hosted by Ithaca (21-14) at Ben Light Gymnasium on Friday. Ithaca won the first two sets by identical 25-20 scores, before RIT rallied with a 25-23 win in set three. Ithaca closed out the match with a 25-21 win in the final set. The Tigers finished the season with a 22-16 record.
RIT struggled mightily in the first set, and led 20-19 in the second set, before Ithaca scored the final six points for the win. In set three, RIT nearly squandered a 23-17 lead, before a
Kyra Wilson-Houck (Painted Post, NY/Corning West) kill ended Ithaca's comeback and gave the Tigers a 25-23 win. In the final set, Ithaca jumped out to an 11-7 lead, before RIT rallied to tie the set at both 13-13 and 19-19. From there, Ithaca scored six of the final eight points to secure the win.
Junior
Kristin Parish (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) led the Tigers with 11 kills, while hitting .478. She also added a team-best four blocks. Senior
Jessica Schaffer (Wellington, OH/Keystone), playing in her final collegiate contest, recorded 21 digs, 10 kills, and a team-high four service aces. Wilson-Houck added 10 kills, while sophomore setter
Christina Worth (Valencia, CA/Valencia) dished out 42 assists and added 12 digs.
Megan Henriksen (Silver Spring, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel) also had 13 digs.
Kate Thoene led the Bombers with 15 kills, while hitting .344. Chelsea Hayes and Jessica Hoeffner added 13, and 11 kills, respectively. Taylor Horton recorded a team-best 21 digs. Sydney Folk and Marissa Woodcome combined for 41 assists.
The all-time series between the two schools is now knotted at 40-40. RIT falls to 5-8 all-time in the Empire 8 Tournament since its inception in 2002.
Schaffer finishes her stellar Tiger career second all-time in program history with 260 service aces, third with 1,923 digs, and third with 1,833 kills.
The Bombers will play Elmira in the Empire 8 Championship tonight at 7 p.m. The winner of that match will earn an automatic berth in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
