Women's soccer falls 3-0 to Nazareth

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT women's soccer team was defeated 3-0 by Nazareth College in Empire 8 action on Wednesday afternoon. The loss drops the Tigers to 7-4-3 overall and 2-3-2 in the Empire 8. Nazareth improves to 10-5-0 overall and 7-0-0 in the conference.

The Golden Flyers took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when Meagan Rivera chipped a ball over RIT goalkeeper Ashley Valenti (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima)'s head from 30 yards out. Rivera's shot caught Valenti off the line and went over her head and into the right corner.

Kelly Kuhn and Erica Conte hooked up for a goal in the 24th minute to give the Golden Flyers a 2-0 lead. Conte played a wonderful through-ball to Kuhn who dribbled around Vaenti and fired a shot into the open net.

After halftime the Tigers generated a couple solid scoring chances. In the 54th minute freshman Alexa Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) gathered a pass from Monica Cook (Webster, NY/Webster Schroder) inside the Nazareth box. The freshman turned and fired a good low shot that was saved off the line by a Nazareth defender.

Two minutes later sophomore Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had an open shot inside the Nazareth eight-yard box. She turned and fired a shot that clanked off the cross bar and out of danger.

Kaylee Benz made it 3-0 on her goal in the 71st minute to put the game out of reach.

Nazareth had an 11-6 advantage over RIT in shots. Each team took four corner kicks. Valenti took the loss for RIT allowing two goals and making one save. Alyssa Henkel (Newark, NY/Newark) came on and played the second half, making one save. Hillary SImon picked up the win for Nazareth making three saves.

RIT will host Empire 8 foe Elmira College on Saturday, October 23 at 1 pm on RIT Field.
